Sheboygan is a small hotel market: about fifteen places to stay in the city itself, and they fall into three clear groups. A few sit on the lake or the river within about half a mile of downtown, one suite hotel sits in the middle of it, and the chain hotels line the roads out toward I-43, three or four miles from the beach. Choosing between Sheboygan hotels mostly means deciding whether you want to walk to dinner or park free and pay less.
Distances below are straight-line from the center of downtown, and every property named is one you can book in Sheboygan, apart from one Kohler hotel that gets its own section because so many people assume it is in the city.
Where to stay in Sheboygan, in short
Stay on the water or downtown if you want to walk to the beach, the restaurants and the Arts Center; stay out by the interstate if you are passing through, traveling on price, or here for Kohler golf.
The first group is small and books first: Blue Harbor Resort on the lakefront, the Watershed Hotel and Harbor Winds on the river, and two independent rentals with lake views. The middle is the GrandStay suites a few blocks from 8th Street. The third group is the familiar chains along South Taylor Drive, Kohler Memorial Drive and the north side, all with free parking and most with an indoor pool. There is no hotel on a Sheboygan beach in the way an ocean resort town has them; the lakefront here is parks and marina, and the hotels sit beside it.
On the water
Blue Harbor Resort is the only full hotel on the Lake Michigan shore in Sheboygan, while the Watershed Hotel and Harbor Winds face the Sheboygan River and a pair of rentals trade the hotel services for a view of the lake.
The resort is the obvious base for a family with young children, and the water park is the reason. It is also the busiest hotel in town on a summer weekend, which is worth knowing if you came for a quiet lake break. Breaker Bay and the Quarry aqua park are the two water parks in the city, and they suit very different days.
On the river, the Watershed Hotel on North 15th Street has simply furnished rooms with views of the Sheboygan River and a continental breakfast, about half a mile west of downtown. Call it riverfront, not beachfront; the lake is a walk of just over a mile away.
Harbor Winds Hotel on South 8th Street is a straightforward two-story hotel right on the Riverwalk, with free breakfast. Its selling point is location: the walking path along the river leads toward the lake and Deland Park, and the Viglietti restaurants are a few minutes up the street.
Two rentals put the lake itself outside the window. Lakejoy Loft, on a quiet dead-end road about 2 miles south of downtown, is a two-room, three-bed loft with its own access to the beach, available year-round.
Castino Lakeview Mansion on St Clair Avenue stands on a 50-foot bluff above the lake near the beach and the marina, and it is built for large groups, with a gated exterior and an outdoor fire pit. Know which beach sits below you before you book, because Sheboygan's beaches range from busy and supervised by the county's water testing to long and empty.
Downtown and walkable
The GrandStay Residential Suites on Niagara Avenue is the downtown hotel, about a quarter-mile from the center, and staying there puts the Arts Center, the 8th Street restaurants and the river within a few minutes on foot.
From here the John Michael Kohler Arts Center is a short walk, Trattoria Stefano and Il Ritrovo are a little further south on 8th Street, and the lighthouse pier and Deland Park are about half a mile east. That walkability is the main reason to pay more than the interstate rate, and it is why a first day in Sheboygan feels easier from a downtown base than from a highway exit.
Walking to dinner is the other half of it. Sheboygan restaurants cluster within a few blocks of 8th Street and along South Pier Drive, so a downtown or river hotel means no designated driver for a supper club evening.
The interstate hotels
The chain hotels sit three to four miles from downtown in two clusters, one on South Taylor Drive near the I-43 interchange southwest of the city and a single hotel on the north side, with two budget options closer in on the west side, and these are where the price drops and the parking is free.
The south cluster is three hotels within about half a mile of each other. AmericInn by Wyndham on South Taylor Drive has an indoor pool and a hot tub, with free breakfast and parking. The Holiday Inn Express on Germaine Avenue markets itself to Kohler visitors, which makes sense, since the village is only a few miles northwest, and it has a pool, a gym and a free breakfast. Fairfield by Marriott, a little further down South Taylor Drive, adds a heated indoor pool, a gym and a business center.
On the north side, Home2 Suites by Hilton on North Marquette Circle has kitchenette suites with dishwashers, an indoor pool and a free breakfast, and it is pet-friendly, which rules it in for anyone traveling with a dog.
Closer in on the west side, La Quinta Inn by Wyndham on Kohler Memorial Drive, about 1.5 miles from downtown, has a fitness center, meeting rooms and a free breakfast. Super 8 by Wyndham on Wilgus Avenue is the straightforward budget choice with a continental breakfast.
If a pool matters, and with children it usually does, the ones that list one are AmericInn, Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield, Home2 Suites and GrandStay downtown, plus the full water park at Blue Harbor. The trade-off at every interstate hotel is the same: you will drive to the beach, the restaurants and the Arts Center, which is easy enough in a town this size but rules out walking home after dinner. The South Taylor Drive hotels sit close to the I-43 exits on the south side, and the drive between Sheboygan and Milwaukee on I-43 goes right past them.
B&Bs, farms and cabins
The independent places to stay are few and small: a fiber farm that serves breakfast, a bed and breakfast run by its owners, and a cabin by a pond, all on the edges of the city.
Father Wind Bed & Breakfast on North 13th Street, about 2 miles north of downtown, is a small, quiet B&B run by its hosts, Mark and Luanne, who are the reason people book it. Pond Cabin on Scott Lake Road, north of the city, is a private cabin in a wooded valley beside a pond, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a wood-burning fireplace across more than 1,200 square feet, for up to four guests.
The honest limitation is supply. With only a handful of independent properties, summer and festival weekends go first, so book these as early as your plans allow.
Which hotel for which trip
For families, Blue Harbor is the easy answer because of the water park, and GrandStay is the cheaper one because every suite has a kitchen; for everyone else the choice turns on walking, parking and pets.
Couples after a lake view do best with Lakejoy Loft's beach access or a river room at the Watershed. Groups and wedding parties are who Castino Lakeview Mansion is built for. Golfers heading to Kohler or Whistling Straits save time at the Holiday Inn Express or the other south-side hotels near the interstate exits. Dog owners should look at Home2 Suites first. Long stays make sense wherever there is a kitchen, which means GrandStay, Home2 Suites or Pond Cabin. Anyone driving through on a budget will find Super 8 and La Quinta the least fuss.
Campers have one more option just south of the city. Kohler-Andrae State Park, on the lake south of downtown, has campsites behind the dunes, the only way to sleep within earshot of Lake Michigan without paying hotel rates.
Staying in Kohler instead
The American Club, the region's landmark hotel, is in the village of Kohler, about 3.5 miles west-southwest of downtown Sheboygan, not in the city.
Search results routinely list it as a Sheboygan hotel, which confuses visitors who expect to walk to the lake. The American Club is a restored Tudor-style building in Kohler, with formal rooms, an acclaimed restaurant, a tavern and a bar.
It is the base for the Kohler golf courses, including Blackwolf Run across the road from the village, and for anyone whose trip is built around those courses it is the natural choice. If the trip is about the beach, surfing or downtown, a Sheboygan hotel puts you where you actually want to be.
Whistling Straits, the Ryder Cup course, is on the lake north of Sheboygan rather than in Kohler, so golfers splitting their rounds between the two areas can reasonably base themselves in either. The golf courses around Sheboygan spread across Kohler, the lakeshore and Sheboygan Falls.
When to book
Book early for summer weekends, for the weekends Sheboygan and the county hold their big festivals, and for race weekends at Road America; midweek and winter are when rooms are easy to find.
Summer is the obvious peak, with Blue Harbor and the lake-view rentals filling first. Race weekends at Road America, 14 miles west-northwest in Plymouth, draw big crowds and can fill rooms well beyond the track, so check its schedule before assuming a July weekend will be quiet. Brat Days in late summer and the county fair over Labor Day weekend have the same effect on a smaller scale, and Sheboygan events through the year show which weekends to plan around.
Winter is quiet, and rates are generally at their lowest. Surfers and cross-country skiers have the town largely to themselves then, and the best time to visit Sheboygan depends less on the hotels than on whether you want to swim in the lake or watch storms roll across it.
