We had an amazing tent camping experience at Kohler-Andrae State Park! Our campsite was just a short walk from the bathrooms, which was incredibly convenient, and it wasn’t far from the beach either. The beach itself was beautiful—clean sand and crystal-clear water. Water was shallow for a good ways. The areas near the parking lots were understandably busy, but if you walked a little farther down the shoreline, it became peaceful and felt like you had the beach almost to yourself. We also enjoyed exploring the different hiking trails. The cordwalk trail was definitely a workout, but the views made every step worth it. We loved the little paths that branched off to the lake, giving us the perfect chance to cool off along the way. The highlight of our trip was the night sky. With so little light pollution, we were able to see the Milky Way stretching across the sky—an unforgettable experience. We’ll definitely be back!

Kohler-Andre State Park: Originally named just Terry Andre State Park when it opened in the late 1920s, the park became Kohler-Andrae State Park in 1966 following a donation from the Kohler Company. The park is in the Town of Wilson, which is just south of Sheboygan. It features a plethora of wildlife, numerous campsites, the Sanderling Nature Center, majestic sand dunes, over two miles of golden beaches along the cool waters of Lake Michigan, The Black River Marsh Boardwalk, and whispering pines. My favorite part was the miles of hiking trails through the sandy dunes. A show titles “Wildlife of Wisconsin” was also neat in the Sanderling Nature Center. The presenter shared some interesting stories and also brought along some live animals, such as baby possums, falcon, and barn owl. It can be a little chillier in the park because of its proximity to Lake Michigan and the wetlands can cause an increase in mosquitos, so plan accordingly. Overall, it’s a nice park within short driving distance of Milwaukee.

Kohler-Andre State Park is a beautiful and peaceful stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline that feels much more natural and untouched than many beach areas along the coast. The dunes, tall grasses, wooded trails, and long sandy beach make it a perfect place to slow down and enjoy the outdoors. It has a very relaxing atmosphere, whether you’re walking the boardwalk trails, listening to the waves, or just sitting on the beach watching the lake.

This is a unique state park along the shore of lake Michigan in Sheboygan County. What makes it unique are the sand dunes which are protected in the state in a few locations, this being one, another is in Door County in Sturgeon Bay at Whitefish Dunes state park. There is a board walk that can be followed along the dunes with a barrier keeping walkers from exploring on the protected dunes. There are legs that go off the main trail that go to views of the lake which is stunning on a sunny day. The trail is very hilly, and the board walk for the path is quite rickety in spots, some areas the board walk is on a steep angle, so use great caution when walking on it. Some spots are under sand, others are so misshapen and tilted it's not safe to walk on. People not steady on their feet should consider if it's safe for them or not. This is a beautiful park, and campground with beautiful campsites. So walk safely, stay on the trails and watch signs for when the welcome center is open. There is plenty of parking at different points of the park. They didn't have any bathrooms or outhouse along the lake trail, but there are plenty in the campground and if the welcome/visitor center is open there should be a bathroom in there as well. There is a nice playground for kids. Enjoy!

Kohler-Andrae State Park Kohler-Andrae has slowly become one of those places I truly enjoy going back to. The first thing that always gets me is the beautiful stretch of white sand along Lake Michigan—it almost feels like a mini beach getaway without having to travel far. The water here is nice and shallow near the shore, which makes it perfect for a relaxed, family-friendly day. I usually prefer going prepared with food and drinks because it’s such a great spot to just sit down, unwind, and enjoy a picnic by the water. There is an entry fee, but if you’re someone who plans to visit Wisconsin state parks often, the annual pass definitely feels worth it. What I personally love is that it’s not just about the beach. The trails through the forest and dunes add a completely different vibe—quiet, scenic, and a nice break from the busier shoreline. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend an entire day without getting bored. I’ve also noticed they have good camping options, which I’d love to try sometime. The park is well maintained with clean restrooms and changing areas, which makes the whole experience comfortable. Parking is convenient and close to the beach, though it can get crowded during peak season—so timing your visit helps.
