Door County Wisconsin Wedding Venues: Bay Side or Lake Side?

Lodges with rooms, a modern barn on 30 acres, bay-side windows in Egg Harbor and the bigger halls in Sturgeon Bay, with which shore each sits on.

Door County is the thumb of land that sticks out into Lake Michigan north of Green Bay, about 70 miles long and rarely more than 15 wide. Water on both sides is what people come for, and it is what makes Door County wedding venues different from anything further south in Wisconsin: almost every one of them is a weekend, not an evening.

Guests drive up on Friday, stay two or three nights, and spend the day before or after the wedding eating cherry pie, biking the state parks and watching the sun go down over the bay. Choosing a venue here means choosing where your guests will sleep, which shore they will be on, and how far they will be from the nearest town with restaurants.

Below are eleven venues across the peninsula, from the lodges at Baileys Harbor down to the ballrooms in Sturgeon Bay and one just south of the county line in Algoma. Capacities and packages are included where the venue publishes them.

Bay side or lake side?

The peninsula has two shores, and they feel like different places. The west side faces the waters of Green Bay. Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim and Sister Bay sit along it, and because the shore faces west, it gets the sunsets. It is also the busier side, with more restaurants, more shops and more traffic on Highway 42 in July.

The east side faces open Lake Michigan. Baileys Harbor is the main town there, and it is quieter, with fewer restaurants and more woods and rocky shoreline. The sun comes up over the water on this side, and evenings can be cooler and windier than the bay side a few miles west.

Neither is better. If you want a sunset ceremony and guests who can walk to dinner, look at the bay side. If you want privacy and a weekend that feels away from it all, look at the lake side. Egg Harbor and Baileys Harbor are only about 8 miles apart in a straight line, so guests can easily do both.

Lodges where guests stay on site

For a destination wedding, the strongest Door County venues are the ones with rooms. When guests are on the property, there is no shuttle to arrange, no one driving dark county roads after the reception, and the morning-after brunch happens on its own.

Gordon Lodge sits on the shore of North Bay, just north of Baileys Harbor on the lake side, and it has been taking guests for close to a century. Ceremonies usually happen at the water's edge. Receptions move into the Gordon House Event Center or the Boat House.

The reason couples book it is the lodging: cottages, suites and vacation homes on the property, plus a private beach, trails, watercraft rentals and fire pits for the late part of the night. It is the most complete wedding weekend on the peninsula.

Gordon Lodge is popular and books early. If you want a summer Saturday there, start the conversation more than a year ahead, and ask how many rooms they will hold for your guests and until when.

Stone Harbor Resort is on the Sturgeon Bay waterfront, beside the marina at the base of the peninsula. It has indoor ballrooms that handle bigger weddings than most Door County venues, and suites and loft rooms in the same complex.

Ceremonies can go outside along the water, with boats in the background. It is less secluded than the lodges further north, but it is the easiest venue on the peninsula for guests coming from Green Bay, about 38 miles away in a straight line.

Maxwelton Braes Lodge, just outside Baileys Harbor, was built in 1929 and is still family-owned. It comes with a golf course, mature trees and a lodge interior of wood beams, stone fireplaces and big windows.

Ceremonies are usually outside on the grounds with the course behind, and the reception moves indoors for up to about 200 to 250 guests. You can book the whole property, with rooms, golf, tennis, pickleball and a fire pit, so the wedding party has the place to itself.

Northern Haus and the newer venues

Northern Haus sits on 30 private acres just outside downtown Sister Bay. The building is a modern white barn with clean lines, exposed beams and a built-in bar, with a covered patio for cocktail hour. Ceremonies happen in the Forest Retreat, a clearing in the woods a short walk away.

It seats up to about 225. The building is climate-controlled, so it is one of the few Door County venues that works properly in winter, and a Door County wedding photographer says most of the weddings she shoots on the peninsula are now at Northern Haus.

Northern Haus has made a modern, design-led wedding a realistic option in a county that used to be mostly lodges and resorts. A few miles south in Baileys Harbor, The Augusta Club is another newer option on the lake side, and worth a tour if Northern Haus is already booked for your date.

Whichever you choose, ask early how lodging works. Northern Haus lists accommodations alongside the barn, but a full guest list will still spill into Sister Bay, Ephraim and Fish Creek, all within a few miles, so set up a hotel block at the same time you sign.

Egg Harbor, on the bay

Kress Pavilion sits just above the shoreline in the middle of Egg Harbor, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the bay. Ceremonies can be held outside facing the water or indoors under exposed beams, and the reception room has wood floors and fireplaces.

It holds up to about 120, and The Knot lists a starting price around $5,000. The building is also the village library and community centre, so the rental money goes back into Egg Harbor. Its strength is light: the porch catches the evening sun, and Egg Harbor's restaurants and inns are within walking distance.

Woodwalk is a gallery in the woods outside Egg Harbor that also hosts weddings, and Zola lists it for up to about 190 guests. It suits a couple who would rather be surrounded by art and trees than a ballroom.

Because it is a working gallery, ask what can be moved, what has to stay, and where the dance floor goes.

Barns and farms

About Thyme Farm near Baileys Harbor is a historic barn wedding venue with room for about 250. It suits couples who want the farm wedding look with Door County around it rather than suburban fields.

Like most barn venues, it is a space you fill rather than a package you buy. Ask what comes with the rental (tables, chairs, restrooms, heat) and what you bring in yourself.

The Grain Loft is in Algoma, just south of the county line in Kewaunee County and about 16 miles from Sturgeon Bay. It sits on 15 acres across the road from Lake Michigan, with small cottages around the main loft that can be used for food stations and guest space. It seats up to about 175.

Couples who married there talk about having the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and dance all in one place. One honest note from reviews: the getting-ready space opens onto the main room, so plan the bride's timing before guests arrive.

Sturgeon Bay options

Sturgeon Bay is the largest town in Door County and the easiest place to reach from Green Bay. Besides Stone Harbor, it has Door County Gala, a 10,800-square-foot event hall that opened in March 2024 and is built for big receptions. If your guest list runs past what the lodges can hold, this is where to look.

North of town, Fernwood Gardens Ballroom is another option for a seated reception. Both work well for couples who want Door County without asking guests to drive another 30 miles up the peninsula, since Sister Bay is about 27 miles north of Sturgeon Bay in a straight line.

Choosing by guest count

Guest count narrows Door County faster than anything else, because the peninsula's venues are mostly mid-sized.

Under about 100 guests, almost everything is open to you. Kress Pavilion's room of about 120 suits this size well, and a smaller wedding is easier to house: a couple of inns in Egg Harbor or Ephraim can take the whole list.

Between about 120 and 250, look at Northern Haus, The Grain Loft, Maxwelton Braes and About Thyme Farm. This is the most common size for a Door County wedding, and it is the size where lodging starts to need real planning.

Above about 250, the choice shrinks to the bigger rooms at the south end of the peninsula: Stone Harbor's ballrooms and the hall at Door County Gala in Sturgeon Bay. They are closer to Green Bay too, which helps when a guest list that size means more people driving in for the day.

Getting married in a park

Some couples skip the venue for the ceremony and marry outside in one of the state or county parks, then hold the reception somewhere with a kitchen and a roof. Peninsula State Park, between Fish Creek and Ephraim, is the best known. Parks generally need a permit or reservation for a group ceremony and have rules on numbers, chairs, music and alcohol, so call the park office before you plan around it.

It works best for a small ceremony early in the day, before the summer crowds, with guests moving to the reception venue afterward.

What a Door County wedding weekend looks like

Most Door County weddings run Friday to Sunday. Friday is arrival and a welcome event, often something casual near the water. A Door County fish boil is the classic choice: whitefish and potatoes cooked over an open fire outside, finished with a burst of flame when the cook throws kerosene on the coals. Several restaurants on the peninsula put one on for groups.

Saturday is the wedding. Leave guests the morning free, because they will want to see the place: Peninsula State Park between Fish Creek and Ephraim, the shops in Sister Bay, a beach on the lake side. Sunday is brunch and the drive home.

Timing matters more here than in a city. If your wedding lands in mid to late July, it overlaps with cherry season, which is lovely and also busy. October brings the leaf colour and a second wave of visitors. June is quieter, greener and cooler, especially on the lake side.

Questions to ask a Door County venue

Ask how many guest rooms they hold and until what date, since unbooked rooms in July are released fast. Ask whether there is a minimum spend on peak Saturdays, and whether Friday or Sunday dates cost less.

Ask what the rain and wind plan is. A tent on the lake side in June is a different proposition from one on the bay in August. And ask which vendors they work with, because many photographers, caterers and rental companies come up from Green Bay and add a travel fee.

Finally, ask about the music curfew. Door County's villages are small and quiet, and some venues have to wind the party down earlier than a city ballroom would.

Booking, season and getting guests here

Late spring through early fall is the season. Summer weekends are the busiest, both for venues and for every hotel room on the peninsula, and October colour brings a second rush. If you want a Saturday in July, August or early October, start looking a year or more ahead, and book the guest rooms at the same time as the venue.

Weekday and shoulder-season weddings are easier. Many inns and restaurants cut their hours or close between late fall and spring, so a winter wedding means fewer options for guests, though venues like Northern Haus run year-round.

Most guests will drive. Green Bay's airport is the nearest commercial one, about 38 miles from Sturgeon Bay and about 64 from Sister Bay as the crow flies. From Milwaukee it is roughly 127 miles to Sturgeon Bay in a straight line, and from Chicago about 205, so for many families this is a half-day trip each way.

One practical point: phone coverage is patchy in parts of the peninsula, especially on the lake side. Put addresses and directions on your wedding website rather than relying on guests' maps.

Where Door County fits

Door County is one of six wedding regions in a state that sorts its venues by region, and it is the one most couples choose for a full weekend rather than a single day.

If having the water right there is what draws you, some of the Lake Michigan venues further south sit on the shore near Sheboygan and Milwaukee, closer to most guests.

And if a barn is the point rather than the peninsula, there are barns from Madison to the Fox Valley worth the drive.

Coming through Green Bay anyway? Green Bay sits about 38 miles from Sturgeon Bay, and its rooftop and hotel ballrooms make a practical rehearsal-dinner stop for guests driving up.
