Appleton Wedding Venues (and Oshkosh, 18 Miles South)

Appleton's river halls and converted warehouse, the clubs and parks around town, and Oshkosh's historic downtown rooms and barns 18 miles south.

The Fox River runs north through the Fox Cities on its way to Green Bay, and Appleton sits on its banks with old paper mills, warehouses and a downtown built on the bluffs above the water. The wedding venues Appleton couples choose between follow that river: converted warehouses in the flats below downtown, a new riverside hall, and barns and parks spreading out on the edges of town.

Oshkosh, about 18 miles south in a straight line where the Fox River meets Lake Winnebago, adds a historic downtown and its own barns. This guide covers both cities, with the straight-line distance from downtown Appleton for every venue.

On the Fox River

Poplar Hall sits on the river in the RiverHeath development, about a mile from downtown Appleton, and has hosted weddings since the summer of 2021. A two-storey window looks out over the water, cocktails go up on the second-floor mezzanine, and a wood-and-concrete stage comes with its own speakers and lights. It holds up to about 160, for the ceremony and the reception.

A coordinator comes with the venue. One couple wrote that she decorated for them, ran their rehearsal and handled cleanup, so all they had to do at the end of the night was load their boxes. Hotels, shops and bars in downtown Appleton are within walking distance.

West Edison Rivery is a converted warehouse in the flats below downtown Appleton, the old industrial strip along the river. The interior has been completely redone, and it hosts weddings, corporate events and parties.

It is the pick for couples who want an industrial room with some history, a short walk from downtown bars and restaurants.

Clubs and parks

The Fox Club, about 3 miles northwest of downtown, is an event venue with a rooftop, a walking trail and a video board, plus fun extras like a custom jersey and an Old Fashioned fountain at the bar.

Food comes plated or buffet-style, and reviewers praise the event planners for taking the stress out of the day. It suits a lively wedding with a sense of humour.

The Hillside at Plamann Park is a reception room inside a county park, about 5 miles north of downtown, with big windows over the park and a wrap-around patio.

It is one of the more affordable venues in the area. One caution from reviews: the timeline for getting into the building to set up is strict, so plan your decorating crew around it.

Barns west and north

About 8 miles west of downtown, Homestead Meadows Farm is a farm venue on the western edge of the Fox Cities, for couples who want fields rather than a city view. Ask for a tour, since we have few details on what the barn includes.

Simply Country Barn near Freedom, about 8 miles northeast of downtown Appleton, is a country barn venue between Appleton and Green Bay.

It is on the Green Bay side of Appleton, which helps when families are split between the two cities.

Oshkosh, 18 miles south

Oshkosh has a compact downtown along the river, with older brick buildings that have been turned into event spaces, and barns in the farmland to the west and south.

The Gibson Social Club occupies a historic building in downtown Oshkosh, fitted out as a wedding and event venue with an industrial style and thoughtful decor.

Downtown Oshkosh's hotels and bars are a short walk away, which makes the after-party easy.

A few blocks away on North Main Street, Venue 404 fills the First National Bank Building, built in 1926. The original bank vault, which appeared in the Johnny Depp film Public Enemies, is now a speakeasy cocktail lounge, and the main hall under the ornate ceiling holds about 250.

A wedding coordinator, linens, coffee service and a bridal suite come free with the booking, and event listings put its wedding pricing at about $375 to $3,000, which is low for a historic downtown room.

Poplar Creek Barn is about 21 miles southwest of downtown Appleton, on the west side of Oshkosh. Its owners ran a wedding rental company before they bought the barn, so it comes with planning help and a large stock of decor, plus extras like uplighting, a sound system and beverage service.

There is a play area, which makes it an easy choice for a wedding with a lot of children on the guest list.

South of town, Brighton Acres is a barn among farm fields and dairy cows near Oshkosh, about 23 miles from downtown Appleton. Reviewers praise the food, the management and the light for photos. They also warn about bugs in the outdoor area in summer, so ask what the venue does about them and bring repellent for an evening ceremony.

What is included, and what is not

The Fox Cities venues differ most in what comes with the rental, so compare the inclusions before you compare the prices.

Poplar Hall includes a coordinator who decorates, runs the rehearsal and cleans up. Venue 404 includes a coordinator, linens, coffee service and a bridal suite. Poplar Creek Barn's owners can supply most of the decor themselves. At the park and club venues, ask what the room fee covers and which caterers you can use.

Then ask about timing. The Hillside at Plamann Park has a strict window for getting in to set up, which matters if you plan to decorate yourself. And at any of the barns, ask about the rain plan and, for summer evenings, the bugs.

Miles are straight-line from downtown Appleton, not driving times. Capacities vary by room set-up, so ask each venue directly.

City room or country barn?

The Fox Cities give you both within a short distance, which makes the choice mostly about style and logistics.

City rooms, like the riverside hall, the warehouse and the two Oshkosh buildings, put guests close to hotels, restaurants and bars, and they work in any weather. They usually come with tables, chairs and a kitchen or catering arrangement.

Barns give you fields, sunsets and space, but they need more planning: guests drive back to town after the reception, you may rent more of the equipment, and the outdoor season runs from about late May to early October. Ask every barn whether it is heated and what the rain plan is.

Booking

Couples in the Fox Cities typically book about 15 months ahead, according to wedding directory data for Appleton. Summer and early fall Saturdays go first.

Watch the calendar for big local events. Oshkosh hosts the EAA AirVenture fly-in every July, when hotels across the whole region fill up for a week and prices climb. If your date is in late July, check the AirVenture dates before you book anything.

Green Bay's airport is about 26 miles northeast of downtown Appleton, and Appleton has its own regional airport west of the city. Milwaukee is about 88 miles south in a straight line.

Beyond the Fox Cities

About 26 miles northeast, a restored 1924 hotel, a rooftop over the same river and two country clubs make the city of Green Bay the bigger-city option.

If a barn is the main event, Wisconsin barns, region by region run from the Fox Valley to Madison and Door County.

And if you are still deciding where in the state to marry, the Fox Valley is one of six regions across Wisconsin.
