Small Wedding Venues in Wisconsin for 2, 20 or 50

Small and micro wedding venues across Wisconsin for 2, 20 or 50 guests, from a $700 ceremony in the vines to a Capitol Square loft and a gallery in Door County.

A small wedding in Wisconsin used to mean the courthouse and a dinner reservation. Now plenty of venues will happily take 2, 20 or 50 people, and some of the best ones sell a ceremony on its own for a few hundred dollars. The catch is that most small wedding venues in Wisconsin do not advertise themselves that way, so you have to know where to look and what to ask.

This guide is organised by size: just the two of you, about 20 guests, and about 50. It names the venues that suit each, with the prices they publish where they publish them.

What counts as small, micro or an elopement?

There is no fixed definition, and the people who plan weddings for a living do not agree. One Wisconsin wedding photographer draws the lines at 2 to 20 guests for an elopement, 20 to 50 for a micro wedding and 50 to 75 for an intimate wedding. A Milwaukee planner quoted by Milwaukee Magazine puts the top of a micro wedding at 75. A Bayfield inn says no more than 30.

For planning, what matters more than the label is the number. A venue that is perfect for 12 will feel empty at 60, and one built for 150 will swallow 20. Count your guests first, then look at the sections below.

Just the two of you (or close to it)

For an elopement with a witness or two and an officiant, you want a beautiful spot, a short booking and no minimum spend.

SoLu Estate Winery in Cascade publishes the clearest small-wedding option in the state: a ceremony on its own for $700, at the gazebo or under an arch in the vines, while the winery stays open to the public around you.

Afterward you can stay for a glass of mead or wine on the grounds, which turns a ten-minute ceremony into an afternoon. SoLu is about 43 miles north of Milwaukee in a straight line.

The Abbey Resort in Fontana, at the quiet west end of Geneva Lake, sells packages specifically for elopements and micro weddings, with indoor and outdoor spaces sized for a small group.

Because it is a resort, you can marry, have dinner and stay the night without leaving the property, and the marina dock at golden hour makes the photograph.

For something historic, Wade House in Greenbush is a state historic site built around an 1850s stagecoach inn, with grounds that suit a small ceremony. Ask the site directly about availability and rules.

Near Beaver Dam, Chapel of the Archangels is a chapel venue for couples who want a church-like setting for a small ceremony. We do not have photos of it on our listings yet, so visit before you book.

About 20 guests

At around 20, you have a dinner party, not a reception. The best rooms for this size feel full and warm with a long table, and the food matters more than the dance floor.

The Tinsmith on East Main Street in Madison, a few blocks from the Capitol, has a glass solarium full of natural light that works well for a small ceremony and dinner in the same room. It is one of the few venues with a published small-wedding package.

Its boutique wedding runs Sunday to Thursday between November and April for fewer than 50 guests: $3,250 to $3,500 for eight hours, with a private suite, a gated courtyard, bartenders, sound, tables, chairs and setup included, plus a $1,500 bar minimum. Catering comes from outside.

Also in Madison, The Madison Club is a private club a block off the Capitol Square with dining rooms looking over Lake Monona. For a dinner-style wedding of 20 where the food is the point, it is hard to beat.

In Lake Geneva, Lake Lawn Resort's Geneva Club room handles small ceremonies of up to about 80 and seated dinners of 130, and it scales down well for a group of 20.

Ye Olde Manor House is a bed and breakfast in Elkhorn, about 14 miles from Lake Geneva. For a very small wedding, the appeal is that everyone can stay where you marry.

Book the whole house if you can, so the weekend is yours alone.

About 50 guests

At 50, most standard venues will take you, but many charge as if you were 150. Look for rooms that are naturally sized for 50 to 110, or places that price by the head rather than by the room.

Ellsworth Block on Madison's Capitol Square holds up to about 200 in its main room, but it also hosts elopements, and its smaller spaces, the Atrium and the Skydeck, suit cocktails or a short guest list. The Capitol is across the street for photos.

You can choose any caterer, and event listings put its wedding pricing at about $700 to $4,700, so a small Friday or Sunday wedding here can cost far less than the headline suggests.

Elm Grove Woman's Club, in the western suburbs of Milwaukee, is a community hall with a stage and a chandelier that is rented out for receptions and vow renewals. Reviewers call it an affordable choice, especially for a reception after an elopement or a destination wedding.

It is a room you dress yourself, which keeps the cost down and gives you control.

In Madison, The Bur Oak on the east side handles weddings of about 50 to 110 guests, a size range that fits this group exactly.

Woodwalk is a gallery in the woods outside Egg Harbor in Door County that also hosts weddings. It can take a larger group, but couples with 50 or so guests get a room surrounded by art and trees rather than a ballroom.

For a small Door County wedding, it pairs well with a weekend at one of the inns in Egg Harbor.

Also in Door County, About Thyme Farm near Baileys Harbor is a historic barn that holds up to about 250 but suits a smaller group that wants the barn look.

Small-friendly rooms we found elsewhere

A few venues covered in other guides deserve a mention here for their small-wedding pricing.

In Lake Geneva, Horticultural Hall rents for $640 to $1,800 for a ceremony and reception with 12 hours of use, lets you bring your own food and drink, and has an ivy-walled courtyard that feels private even for 30 people. The Riviera, on the lakeshore, publishes weekday rates from $1,425 for Lake Geneva residents. The full picture is in the Lake Geneva wedding venues.

Near Madison, Badger Farms runs a mini-wedding package for small groups at its working farm, and Four Winds Farm in Fitchburg has spaces for gatherings of 20 or fewer.

In Oshkosh, Venue 404 in a 1926 bank building lists wedding pricing from about $375, with a coordinator, linens and a bridal suite included, a remarkably low floor for a historic room.

What a small wedding costs

The honest answer is that a small wedding is cheaper mainly because the guest list is smaller, not because venues charge less per head. Many venues price a Saturday the same whether you bring 40 people or 140.

The ways around that: book a ceremony-only package, like SoLu's at $700; choose a weekday, a Friday or a Sunday; pick a venue that charges per guest rather than a flat room fee; or split the day, marrying somewhere beautiful and cheap and eating somewhere you love.

SoLu's full price list shows the spread clearly: $700 for the ceremony alone, $1,500 for a semi-private tent reception, and $3,000 to $5,500 for the whole estate. Most venues will not publish numbers like that, so ask for a small-wedding quote specifically.

Eloping in Wisconsin: the paperwork

You need a marriage license from a Wisconsin county clerk before the ceremony, and you apply in person. Wisconsin has a short waiting period between applying and the license being issued, which can sometimes be waived for a fee, and the license is valid for a limited time after that.

The rules and fees vary by county and change from time to time, so call the county clerk where you plan to apply about two months before the date. You will also need an officiant and witnesses; check the current requirements with the clerk at the same time.

Where small weddings fit

Several of the venues here are wineries, and the other Wisconsin wineries that host weddings include more ceremony-in-the-vines options.

For more choice at the 50-guest end, the downtown rooms and barns of the Madison area include several that suit a small group.

In Door County, small weddings fit naturally into a weekend, and Door County venues range from a 120-seat bay-side pavilion to lodges with rooms for everyone.

And if you are still choosing a region, small weddings work almost anywhere in Wisconsin.
