Katikati and Tauranga are close enough that plenty of people commute between them every day, and far enough apart that the trip is a real decision: drive, catch the bus or book a taxi. By road it is about 37 km along State Highway 2, through Te Puna and Bethlehem, and the drive usually takes about 35 minutes. Getting from Katikati to Tauranga without a car is possible on weekdays, as long as you plan around the timetable.

Katikati to Tauranga at a glance
Tauranga is about 37 km by road south-east of Katikati on State Highway 2, around 35 minutes' drive, or 35 to 50 minutes on the BayBus Route 80 Katikati Express. In a straight line it is about 26 km.
Driving is fastest and most flexible. The bus is cheapest and runs six times each way on weekdays. A taxi costs the most, with journey estimates of about $70 to $90 each way.
Driving from Katikati to Tauranga on State Highway 2
Driving from Katikati to Tauranga is a straight run south on State Highway 2, through orchard country, past Te Puna and into Tauranga through Bethlehem.
Most of the road between Katikati and Te Puna is posted at 80 km/h. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency lowered the limit from 100 and 90 km/h to 80 km/h in December 2020, from just south of Marshall Road to near Loop Road. Outside Pahoia School the limit drops to 60 km/h at peak school times, so allow a little extra time at the start and end of the school day.
Route planners estimate the drive at between 32 and 37 minutes. Traffic through Katikati's own Main Road is part of the equation: a planned bypass was dropped in 2022, so all State Highway 2 traffic still passes through the middle of town.
Fill up before you go if you need to. bp is at 11 Main Road at the northern end of town.
Caltex Katikati at 104 Main Road is open 24 hours, with a convenience store, so it is the late-night option.
The bus from Katikati to Tauranga: BayBus Route 80
BayBus Route 80, the Katikati Express, runs between the Katikati Information Centre on Main Road and Durham Street in central Tauranga, six times each way on weekdays.
On BayBus's published weekday timetable, buses leave the Katikati Information Centre for Tauranga at 6:50am, 9:05am, 10:55am, 12:50pm, 2:40pm and 4:30pm. The first bus reaches Durham Street at 7:40am and the last at 5:05pm.
Coming back, buses leave Durham Street for Katikati at 7:50am, 9:55am, 11:40am, 1:35pm, 3:30pm and 5:15pm, with the last arriving in Katikati at 6:05pm.
The timetable runs Monday to Friday except public holidays. Weekend services are more limited and times vary, so check the current timetable on the BayBus website before planning a weekend trip. Timetables change, and the website and journey planner always have the latest version.
If you are driving part of the way, the commuter service stops at the Moore Park park-and-ride, next to the Katikati football fields at Moore Park on Fairview Road. Ōmokoroa, south-east of Katikati, has its own BayBus route into Tauranga, Route 81.
Fares, the Bee Card and the commuter bus
BayBus accepts cash or a Bee Card, the Bay of Plenty's electronic bus card, which is cheaper than cash. Bee Cards are sold on the bus and at Bay of Plenty Regional Council offices.
A separate Katikati to Tauranga tertiary and commuter service also runs from opposite the Information Centre, calling at the Moore Park park-and-ride, the University of Waikato's Tauranga campus, Tauranga Hospital and Toi Ohomai. Its published one-way adult fare is $8.20 cash or $6.56 with a Bee Card.
Taxis and airport transfers from Katikati
For a door-to-door trip, Kiwi Kabs in Katikati takes pre-booked rides locally and runs fixed-price transfers to Auckland Airport.
For Tauranga Airport, the drive from Katikati is about 26 miles, or 42 km, and takes around 37 minutes. There is no direct bus to the airport; a bus trip means catching Route 80 into Tauranga and changing, which takes more than an hour in total.
Katikati to Waihi and Waihi Beach
Waihi is 28 km north of Katikati on State Highway 2, and Waihi Beach is a turn-off to the coast on the way, about 17 km north of Katikati in a straight line.
By bus, the BayBus Route 85 Town Connector links Waihi and Waihi Beach with Katikati on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It connects with the 9:05am Route 80 from the Katikati Information Centre to Tauranga, and on the way back the 1:35pm Route 80 from Tauranga meets the 2:35pm Route 85 at the Information Centre for the return to Waihī.
Driving north, you pass Athenree, where the hot springs sit about 12.6 km from Katikati, before the Waihi Beach turn-off. The road north of Katikati heads into the Waikato at Waihi.
Katikati to Rotorua and Auckland
Rotorua is about 1 hour 45 minutes' drive from Katikati via Tauranga, and Auckland is about two hours' drive to the north-west.
InterCity coaches also run through Katikati twice a day, and InterCity is the public-transport link towards Auckland. For Rotorua without a car, the usual route is into Tauranga first and on from there.
Measured in a straight line, Rotorua Airport is about 70 km south-south-east of Katikati and Auckland Airport about 115 km west-north-west.
Where is Katikati on the map?
Katikati is at the northern end of Tauranga Harbour in the western Bay of Plenty, on State Highway 2 between Tauranga and Waihi. It is a Bay of Plenty town, not a Waikato one. Waihi, 28 km up the road, is where the Waikato begins.
On a map, look for the town where the Uretara Stream meets the harbour, with the Kaimai Range to the west. Ōmokoroa is about 13 km south-east in a straight line, and Te Puna about 18 km.

If you arrive late or miss the last bus, ASURE Kaimai View Motel is on Main Road, a short walk from the bus stop at the Information Centre.
