Four businesses share the address 787 Main Street South. A diner, a bagel counter, a coffee roaster and a florist, all at one number. The Woodbury breakfast question therefore has a simpler answer than most towns manage: park once at 787, and the only real decision left is which door.
The three food ones are genuinely different propositions rather than three versions of the same thing, and they open at different times, which is the part nobody writes down. Breakfast is also the one meal that reliably sets up everything else the town holds across a day, because most of it opens later.
Woodbury breakfast, and who opens early
The order, earliest first, from each business's own listed hours:
Ayla's Bagels & Coffee opens at 6am on weekdays and 7am at weekends, and unlike almost everything else in town it stays open into the evening. Dottie's opens at 7am, seven days a week, and closes at 3pm. West Egg Cafe runs 8am to 3pm and closes on Tuesdays.
So if you are on the road before seven, Ayla's is the only option. If you want a sit-down plate of eggs, Dottie's is open by seven every day of the week including Sunday. And if it is a Tuesday, do not drive to West Egg.
That last one matters more than it sounds, because West Egg is out at Barclay Square on Sherman Hill Road rather than in the centre, so a wasted trip there is a real trip.
The building at 787
It is worth understanding what 787 Main Street South actually is, because it explains the town more generally. Woodbury does this repeatedly: several businesses trading from one address rather than each holding its own shopfront. The restaurant block has it at 641 and 660, the north end has it at 107, and Barclay Square out on Sherman Hill Road is the same arrangement.
The practical effect at 787 is that you can park once and choose between a full diner breakfast, a bagel and a coffee at the counter, or coffee alone, depending on how much time you have. Groups that cannot agree tend to end up here for exactly that reason.
Dottie's, the diner
The donuts are the reason to know about it beyond breakfast. Connecticut Magazine ranked them the state's best for more than five years running, and in 2014 Dottie's won an episode of Donut Showdown on the Cooking Channel. That is an unusual line on a small-town diner's record and it explains the queue at the pastry counter on a Saturday.
Beyond donuts it is a full made-from-scratch menu across breakfast and lunch, and it serves beer and wine, which not many diners do.
Ayla's, and the coffee
Two practical things. There is a proper range of vegan and gluten-free options rather than a token one, which in this town is worth flagging because it is not the norm. And well-behaved dogs are welcome inside, which makes it the obvious stop before or after a walk.
The relationship between the two is worth knowing because it explains why a town of this size supports two coffee operations at one address: they are the same coffee.
Sit-down brunch, away from 787
West Egg Cafe is the brunch room rather than the counter, out at 20 Sherman Hill Road in the Barclay Square plaza. It runs 8am to 3pm and closes Tuesdays. The owners previously ran a place in Roxbury and moved here for a larger space, which is a reasonable signal about how it is going.
Rachel's Kitchen at 230 Main Street South and Country Eatery at 125 Main Street North sit either side of the green, away from the main restaurant block, and are the options when 787 is heaving on a Saturday morning.
Bakeries
Ovens of France at 660 Main Street South is the long-standing one, established enough that people use it as a landmark when giving directions on this stretch.
Ma Petite Bakery is the one that catches people out. It operates from inside Sumpin Sweet Treats at 107 Main Street North rather than from its own shopfront, so if you drive up and down Main Street North looking for a bakery sign you will not find one. Go into the sweet shop.
Something sweet, later on
Dairy Delight at 705 Main Street South is the ice cream, sitting in the middle of the restaurant block a short walk from 787. Sweet Nelsons is out on Flanders Road, which puts it near the marked trails at Flanders rather than in town, and makes it the reward at the end of a walk rather than a stop on Main Street.
Rad Cafe is up on Main Street North. Its listing carries no house number, so treat it as somewhere to find rather than navigate to.
Coffee to take with you
Most mornings in Woodbury are the start of something else, and the geography helps.
From 787 you are a few minutes' walk from the southern end of the restaurant block and a short drive from the antique dealers, so a 6am coffee at Ayla's puts you outside the shops well before they open. The dealers that open at ten keep independent hours and Friday to Sunday is the reliable window, so an early start buys you nothing on a Tuesday.
If the day is the flea market instead, the market opens at 7:30am out on Sherman Hill Road and the vendors are setting up from six. Ayla's at 6am is the only thing in Woodbury open early enough to get coffee before that. The kitchens that open later take over from lunchtime.
