West Bend is the kind of town where your gym choice says something about how you like to spend an hour. There are two YMCA branches less than a mile apart, a run of owner-run gyms with names on the door, a jiu jitsu academy that runs classes several times a day, and an ice rink south of downtown. West Bend gyms also sit at the center of a ring of smaller towns, Slinger, Jackson, Kewaskum and Hartford, that each add something the city doesn't have.
This guide starts in West Bend and works outward, with straight-line distances from downtown so you can judge what's realistic on a weeknight.
The Kettle Moraine YMCA, two branches
West Bend's Y runs two branches about half a mile apart, and they do different jobs. Knowing which is which saves a wasted trip.
The River Shores branch is the leaner fitness floor: steppers, bikes, treadmills, machines, kettlebells and free weights, kept tidy and rarely crowded. It's the one to pick if you want to get in, lift and leave.
Both are 24/7, which makes the Y a real competitor to the key-fob chains if you'd rather your membership support a nonprofit.
West Bend's independent gyms
Much of West Bend's character lives in its smaller gyms, the places run by a named owner who coaches the floor themselves. These cost more than a chain and give you someone who notices whether you're improving.
About 3.5 miles west of downtown, A1 Health and Fitness runs challenging, well-structured workouts in a clean space, and members single out its coaches for their energy and knowledge.
South of downtown, Centered Fitness is owner Aubree's gym, built around programs tailored to each client's goals and limitations. It is the gentlest on-ramp of the three for someone who hasn't trained in years.
The chains are here too. Planet Fitness and an Anytime Fitness both run key-fob gyms in town, and they remain the cheapest way to get a treadmill at 5 a.m. Planet Fitness sits on North 18th Avenue near the Paradise Drive shopping strip, and Anytime Fitness is on West Paradise Drive.
For recovery rather than training, Flex and Flow runs tailored stretching sessions aimed at specific aches and pains, the kind of appointment worth booking if a desk job has your hips locked up.
Brazilian jiu jitsu in West Bend
Downtown, Cho's Martial Arts is one of three Cho's schools in the area, with sister locations in Menomonee Falls and Greenfield, and teaches martial arts to kids and adults. Taekwondo, karate, MMA and traditional Japanese arts each have a strong school somewhere in the metro, and Milwaukee martial arts, sorted by style is the place to compare them.
Yoga and pilates in West Bend
For reformer work, the West Bend studio of Club Pilates runs the chain's reformer classes by type and level. If you'd rather train at home with guidance, Home Training Pilates and Personal Training with Tiffany builds pilates and strength sessions designed to carry over into your own routine.
On the quieter end, The Soul Source on the northwest side is more rest than workout, a place owner Jen and her practitioners have built for slowing down. The difference between a chain reformer class and a classical one is clearest at the city's private, apparatus-based pilates rooms.
On ice
The Kettle Moraine Ice Center, about 2 miles south of downtown, hosts hockey games and runs skating lessons, with locker rooms and a concession stand. For a Wisconsin winter workout that doesn't involve a treadmill, a learn-to-skate session counts.
If you want a bigger sheet, the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee has a 400-meter speedskating oval with a running track around it.
Slinger, 8 miles southwest
Slinger is a small village, and it has an unusually good run of places to train for its size: a yoga studio, a barre studio, a CrossFit box and a strength-and-conditioning gym.
Barre Slinger is built for people who are new to gyms, with an owner and instructors who tailor each class to whoever shows up. Kettle Moraine CrossFit runs a coached workout of the day with a friendly, all-levels crowd.
For lifting, CAL Fitness & Performance keeps an organized free-weight area, a cardio section and the equipment for CrossFit-style group classes. The rest of what the village does, from the racetrack to the trailheads, makes a decent afternoon after a morning class.
Jackson and Kewaskum
Jackson sits about 5 to 7 miles south of downtown West Bend and has two places worth the trip.
Atlas Martial Arts Club teaches jiu jitsu to kids and adults, with intro classes for beginners and separate no-gi classes at youth, adult and advanced levels. It is a patient, beginner-friendly room by its own description.
Kewaskum, about 5 miles north, is smaller still. Veritas MMA runs martial arts classes open to people with no experience, and TRiE Fitness is a trainer-led gym where staff are invested in each client's progress.
Also in Kewaskum, AIMS Fitness is built around personalized instruction from Jen, whose members describe a supportive, encouraging group.
For kids, Washington County Sports Center on Sandy Ridge Road is the county's gymnastics gym, with introductory and intermediate classes, coaches who build confidence one skill at a time, and a coffee station for waiting parents. Its programs run from Tiny Tumblers and Gymnastics Ninjas to girls' gymnastics, three competitive teams and open gym, and it hosts birthday parties too.
Hartford, 11 miles southwest
Hartford is the furthest town in this guide and the one with the deepest martial arts scene, three schools in a small city.
American Taekwondo Center splits its classes by belt level, from white-belt forms up to high-belt technique, with Little Ninjas for the youngest kids and a homeschool class during the day. Okinawan Karate Academy teaches Okinawan karate in evening classes, for discipline and focus as much as fitness.
For the pool, Hartford Recreation Center combines a swimming pool, a basketball court and exercise equipment, with swim classes for kids. Snap Fitness is the 24-hour option in town.
Hartford also has two coaching services worth knowing. The Pursuit Fitness coaches parents and busy professionals in person and remotely, and Train4success offers lessons with coaches Josh and Mckenna.
And Jazzercise of Hartford still runs the classic format, a warm-up, a cardio block set to music, a cool-down and a free-weight segment.
Germantown, 14 miles south
Germantown is still Washington County, and for anyone living on the south end of it, it is closer than downtown West Bend. It has a solid little cluster of its own.
Project Fitness is a straightforward, well-equipped gym, the kind with old-school machines and metal plates, for people who want to lift without frills. For pilates, The Contrology Center welcomes beginners and adjusts each lesson to the person in front of it.
Pilates With Stacers is a one-instructor studio that treats a session as self-care as much as exercise. For martial arts, Germantown families have Surge's whole-family program, with classes starting with Little Tykes for kindergartners and going up to challenging adult classes.
J.K. Lee Black Belt Academy teaches taekwondo with an emphasis on precise technique in a family-friendly room.
For families across the county
Washington County is a family county, and the kids' options are spread across every town in this guide.
The Y's West Washington branch pairs its fitness floor with an early learning child care center, which makes it the easiest place for a parent to train. For gymnastics, the Kewaskum sports center runs everything from Tiny Tumblers to competitive teams. The Kettle Moraine Ice Center runs skating lessons, and Hartford Recreation Center runs swim classes for kids.
For martial arts, American Taekwondo Center starts the youngest kids in Little Ninjas and runs a daytime homeschool class, Atlas Martial Arts Club has youth intro and no-gi jiu jitsu, and Vendetta opens Saturday mornings with a kids' gi class.
If you're picking for a child, sit in on a class before you sign up. You'll know within ten minutes whether the instructor runs a room kids want to come back to.
Picking between town and the towns around it
If you live in West Bend, the Y and the independent gyms will cover a normal week without a drive. The surrounding towns earn the trip for something specific: barre or CrossFit in Slinger, early tennis in Jackson, jiu jitsu or taekwondo in Hartford, an equipment gym or pilates in Germantown.
A good rule is the 15-minute test. If a place is far enough that you'd check the weather before going, you'll go less than you think. Pick the gym you'll drive to on a Tuesday in February, not the one that looks best in September.
For the bigger picture, including the clubs, studios and rinks closer to Milwaukee, gyms in Wisconsin, region by region puts Washington County alongside the rest of the state.
