Mequon doesn't have a downtown gym strip. Mequon gyms sit in two separate clusters about 3 miles apart, and which one you live closer to will decide more about your workout than any membership brochure.
The east side, around Port Washington Road, holds the big club and the two 24/7 chains. The west side, along Cedarburg Road and Mequon Road, holds the coached gyms, the reformer studio, the hot yoga room and the taekwondo school, all within a mile of each other.
The east side: one big club and two 24/7 gyms
If you want courts, a pool and a social calendar under one membership, the east side is where you'll end up. If you want a key fob and a treadmill at 5 a.m., it has that too, in two flavors.
A few minutes away on the same side of town, Planet Fitness sits on Port Washington Road and runs the chain's cheap-membership model. Anytime Fitness is the other 24/7 option, a smaller key-fob gym that works best if you know your own program and just need the door open.
The two price differently. Planet Fitness sells a basic $15-a-month membership and a $24.99 tier that adds guest privileges and spa extras. The Mequon Anytime Fitness is locally owned and its key fob opens thousands of the chain's gyms worldwide, which is handy if you travel for work.
The honest trade-off with both is coaching. You get equipment and hours, and you're on your own once you walk in. For plenty of people that is exactly right, and for the rest it is how a January membership turns into a March cancellation.
The west side: coached training
Cross to the Cedarburg Road side and the gyms get smaller and more hands-on. You book a slot, a trainer runs the session, and someone notices when you don't show up.
For general fitness with the same coached feel, Hype Fitness changes its routines daily so the workouts don't go stale. Members name trainers like Jordan and Matteo in their reviews, which is what you want from a small gym: people you'd recognize at the grocery store.
If you're torn between the two, think about your goal. Athlete Performance is built around sport and athletic movement. Hype is built around showing up three times a week and not getting bored.
Hot yoga and reformer pilates
The heated room in Mequon belongs to 8th State Hot Yoga + Fitness, which runs hot yoga and Pilates-style classes with mats and towels on hand. It has a sister studio in Oconomowoc, so a class pack follows you if you work on the other side of the metro.
For reformer work, Club Pilates brings the chain's format to the same stretch of road: reformer-based classes sorted by type and skill level. The studios differ more than the logos suggest, and the classical alternatives to a chain reformer class are worth knowing before you buy a pack, especially the classical pilates studios on the North Shore and in Bay View.
If you'd rather practice somewhere quieter and unheated, Cedarburg's yoga rooms are 4 miles up the road, and the wider choice across the metro runs from Bikram heat to Bay View yin.
Thiensville: movement set to music
Thiensville is the small village wrapped inside Mequon's footprint, and its fitness option is the gentlest in this guide.
Martial arts in Mequon
For other styles, from Brazilian jiu jitsu to traditional Japanese arts, the closest options are in Glendale, Brown Deer and Germantown, and they're all sorted by style in which Milwaukee martial arts school fits.
What your opening week at each looks like
The format decides how your opening week goes more than the facility does, so it helps to know what you're walking into.
At a club like Elite, expect a tour and a membership conversation before you touch a weight. Ask which classes are included and which cost extra, and whether the pool hours suit yours, because lap lanes are often shared with lessons and water aerobics.
At a coached gym like Athlete Performance or Hype, the opening session is usually an assessment. A trainer watches you move, asks about old injuries and builds from there. Arrive with an honest answer about how often you'll really come, since the program is built around it.
At a 24/7 gym there's no induction at all. You sign up, get a fob and you're on your own, which is freeing if you have a plan and lonely if you don't.
At a heated studio like 8th State, book the class, come hydrated and expect to sweat more than you planned. Mats and towels are available there, so you don't need to buy kit before you know you like it.
For kids and teen athletes
A lot of Mequon's gym traffic is driven by kids, and the west-side cluster is set up for it.
BE Martial Arts runs Tigers classes for younger children on weekday afternoons, so they finish before dinner. Athlete Performance is the place for the teenager who plays a school sport and needs strength and speed work done safely, with a trainer who builds the program around that sport.
For gymnastics, Cedarburg's North Shore Academy sits about 4 miles north and runs everything from recreational classes to competitive teams. For the very youngest, Germantown's Surge dojo starts kindergartners in its Little Tykes program.
If you're choosing for a child, watch one class before you sign anything. A good kids' program is loud and organized at the same time, and you'll know within ten minutes whether the instructor has the room.
Ten minutes in any direction
Mequon sits in the middle of a lot of good options, and plenty of people here train just over a town line.
South in Brown Deer, Murphy's Martial Arts Academy is under 3 miles from the west-side cluster. Southeast in Fox Point, The Lift Pilates Studio teaches classical pilates about 5 miles away, a real alternative to the chain reformer class.
North, Cedarburg's Ozaukee Fitness runs CrossFit about 4 miles up the road, and YogaOne Studio sits at the same distance with classes from hot slow flow to barre.
West in Germantown, Project Fitness is a straightforward equipment gym with old-school machines and metal plates, about 6 miles out. Southwest in Menomonee Falls, Peace Yoga Studio & Wellness Center keeps one of the busiest class calendars in the metro, about 7 miles away.
Which Mequon gym fits you
New to town and want to meet people: Elite. Its calendar does the introductions for you.
Training for a sport, or used to: Athlete Performance.
Want a coach but not a sports program: Hype Fitness.
Need a gym at odd hours on a budget: Planet Fitness or Anytime Fitness, depending on whether you'd rather pay less or train in a smaller, quieter room.
Want heat: 8th State. Want reformer: Club Pilates. Want to move gently with a group: HeartSpace in Thiensville. Want something for the kids that teaches more than kicks: BE Martial Arts.
Just outside Mequon
Five miles north, Cedarburg and Grafton trade clubs for small owner-run gyms, a CrossFit box and two yoga studios, and the run of Cedarburg gyms north through Grafton to Port Washington picks up where this guide ends.
South, Elite's River Glen club in Glendale is under 6 miles from the Mequon club, and the rest of the metro's clubs, studios and rinks are mapped region by region.
