Cedarburg Gyms Along the Interurban Trail to the Lake

Cedarburg's small, coached gyms and yoga studios, then Grafton's run of trainer-led gyms and Port Washington's 24/7 Y and lakefront yoga.

Cedarburg is a small town that takes its workouts seriously in a quiet way. There's no big club here. Cedarburg gyms are mostly owner-run, coached and close enough to downtown that you could walk to two of them from Washington Avenue.

Head a couple of miles northeast and Grafton has the densest run of small coached gyms in Ozaukee County. Keep going to the lake and Port Washington adds a 24/7 Y, a yoga studio that teaches on the beach in summer and two martial arts academies. This guide follows that line north.

Cedarburg's gyms

Downtown Cedarburg's training options are small and personal. You'll find a 24-hour gym a few doors from the main street, a boot camp franchise and a CrossFit box, and you won't find a pool or an indoor track.

Real Fitness is the town's round-the-clock gym, steps from the center of town, with modern equipment and access at any hour. It goes further than most 24-hour gyms on classes, with heated sculpt and hot mat pilates on the schedule, so it works for someone who wants a key fob and the occasional coached session in the same building.

Under a mile northeast of downtown, Burn Boot Camp runs coached group classes with a strong community feel, the franchise version of small-group training. Anytime Fitness on the south side is the other key-fob option.

Two names in town sound like gyms and aren't, which trips people up. The Cedarburg Community Gym is the old Cedarburg High School gym, with its polished hardwood floor and upstairs band room, and these days it hosts local events rather than memberships.

Athlete Performance Cedarburg, about 2.5 miles northwest, is a newer court-sports complex, mostly pickleball on well-lit courts, rather than a training gym like its Mequon namesake. Both are worth knowing about; neither is where you'd go to lift.

CrossFit and gymnastics

Ozaukee Fitness, home of Adapt & Conquer CrossFit, sits about a mile south of downtown and runs CrossFit next to its own specialized programs. The coaches work with every fitness level, so the whiteboard workout gets scaled to you rather than the other way around.

If you've never done CrossFit, ask for the intro sessions. Good boxes teach the lifts before they put a clock on them.

For kids, North Shore Academy of Gymnastics is under a mile south of downtown and runs recreational classes through competitive teams. It is the main gymnastics program in this corner of the county.

Yoga and pilates in Cedarburg

Cedarburg has two dedicated yoga studios and a pilates studio, and they suit different people.

Dirty Feet Yoga & Wellness Studio sits about 2 miles northwest of downtown on Highway 60, and it welcomes every level with instructors who offer modifications as a matter of habit. Its Local Eyes schedule shows the range: vinyasa flow with Ashley Munk and Maddie Arneson, gentle morning flow, strength and stretch, and a cardio core sculpt class with Kimberly Manthey.

South of downtown, classes at YogaOne Studio run from hot slow flow to barre, with experienced instructors guiding each class. If you like heat, start here. If you want a calmer room with more hands-on adjustment, start at Dirty Feet.

For pilates, Core Fit Pilates runs a range of classes in a studio that welcomes beginners. The broader choice runs to reformer chains, [solidcore] and the North Shore's classical studios.

One more local option comes and goes with the calendar. The Cedarburg Cultural Center on Washington Avenue hosts gentle yoga on some Saturday mornings with Susan Koleas, a Cedarburg resident who has taught since 2005, free for CCC members and $10 for everyone else. Registration closes the Friday afternoon before each class.

Grafton, 2 miles northeast

Grafton is where Ozaukee County's coached small-group gyms concentrate. Nine movement businesses sit within about 2 miles of each other, and nearly all of them are built around a trainer rather than a machine floor.

Form & Fitness Health Club feels like the anchor of the group, a club focused on steady improvement with experienced trainers available to guide members. It suits someone who wants structure and a trainer they'll see every week for years.

AMRAP Method keeps extended hours every day and weekends, and builds its training around sustainable progress without injury. Eupraxia changes the workout daily and keeps sessions short, so it fits a lunch break.

Two Grafton gyms are built around their owners. Tri90 Fitness is Oscar Charles Jr.'s gym, with workout plans tailored to each person's needs. At 18 Minute Fitness, owner Jerome pairs high-intensity training with nutrition advice for people with tight schedules.

For something without a timetable, 9Round runs kickboxing-based full-body circuits with no set class times, so you start whenever you walk in. HOTWORX is open 24 hours and puts isometric and HIIT workouts inside infrared saunas, a format that is either your favorite thing or not for you at all.

Grafton also has two martial arts schools. Academy of Martial Arts teaches all ages, children to seniors, with black belt instructors and flexible scheduling. Utopia Martial Arts welcomes every level and leans hard on the feeling that students are family.

Port Washington, on the lake

Port Washington is about 8 miles northeast of Cedarburg, and it rounds out the county with a mix you won't find further inland.

Port Washington Yoga runs group classes, private sessions and the occasional novelty event like goat yoga, all in a deliberately relaxed atmosphere. The schedule on Local Eyes shows morning classes from 8 a.m. through late morning and an evening class at 6, with styles from Yoga 101 and hatha to power, chakra and a 45-minute vinyasa express, plus beach yoga and family sessions.

Beach yoga on the Lake Michigan shore is the reason to make the drive in summer. Check the listing for the week, because outdoor classes move with the weather.

The Feith Family Ozaukee YMCA is open around the clock and runs the full range of Y programs for families. StarrFit is an inclusive coached gym for every stage, from newcomers to seasoned athletes.

For martial arts, Championship Martial Arts focuses on helping children build focus, confidence and respect. Seamless Progression Academy is a martial arts academy whose head instructor guides students from their very early steps onward.

For a key fob and nothing else, Port has its own Anytime Fitness. The town's martial arts schools sit alongside the rest of the metro's dojos in Milwaukee martial arts, sorted by style.

The Interurban Trail ties it together

The best free workout in this guide isn't in a building. The Ozaukee Interurban Trail is a paved rail-trail of roughly 30 miles, completed in 2002, that runs from the Milwaukee County line north through Mequon, Cedarburg, Grafton and Port Washington to the Sheboygan County line.

It is free and open year-round, and people use it for biking, walking, running, in-line skating and, after a good snow, cross-country skiing. The Cedarburg trailhead is at the community center on Washington Avenue, and the trail crosses Cedar Creek downtown on the Interurban Bridge.

From Cedarburg to Port Washington is 9.8 miles on the trail: a few miles through Cedarburg and Grafton, a bridge over the Milwaukee River, then open country before the drop into Port Washington by the lake. Plenty of locals use it as the warm-up. Ride or run to Grafton, take a class, and head home on the same path.

For kids and families

The line from Cedarburg to the lake has a good spread of kids' programs, from gymnastics to martial arts to the Y.

North Shore Academy of Gymnastics in Cedarburg runs recreational classes through competitive teams. Championship Martial Arts in Port Washington is built around children, and Academy of Martial Arts in Grafton teaches everyone from small kids to seniors, so a parent can train in the same building.

The Feith Family Ozaukee YMCA runs family programs around the clock, and Port Washington Yoga schedules occasional family sessions.

Picking your spot on the line

Live in Cedarburg and want to walk to the gym: Real Fitness. Want coaching with a crowd: Burn Boot Camp or Ozaukee Fitness.

Want a trainer who'll know your name for years: Grafton, almost any of them. Want yoga with heat: YogaOne. Without: Dirty Feet.

Want a pool, a 24/7 Y or yoga on a beach: Port Washington.

Five miles south, Mequon has the area's big club and a reformer studio, split between Mequon's two gym clusters.

For the whole state picture, Ozaukee County sits next to everything else in gyms in Wisconsin, region by region.
