Buying direct from producers happens in three main shapes, and most households end up using two of them.
Farmers markets
Many growers in one place on one morning. You get choice, conversation and the chance to compare. You also have to turn up at a fixed time, and the best produce goes early. Prices sit between supermarket and speciality shop.
Farm stands and farm shops
A single farm selling its own produce, sometimes unstaffed with an honesty box. Cheapest per item, freshest, and open most days. The range is whatever that farm grows, so you shop around what is there.
CSA and veg boxes
You subscribe to a share of a farm season and collect or receive a box weekly. Best value and best for the grower, who gets certainty. The trade is that you do not choose what is in it, and in a bad month that means a lot of one vegetable.
Choosing
Cook from a list and want control: market. Drive past a farm daily and cook improvised meals: farm stand. Want to eat seasonally without deciding and are happy to learn new vegetables: CSA box.
