Town squares host several kinds of market and the listings often use the words interchangeably.
Farmers and produce markets
Growers and food producers, usually weekly, morning hours, and you go with a bag and a plan. The point is the week ahead.
Makers and craft markets
Ceramics, textiles, jewellery, prints and candles, usually monthly or seasonal, running later into the day. The point is browsing, and often a gift.
Street food markets
Prepared food to eat there, evenings and weekends, frequently with drinks and music. A meal out rather than a shop.
Christmas and seasonal fairs
A hybrid of all three, once a year, busier than anything else on the calendar. Go early in the day or late in the run for anything you actually need.
Practical notes
Bring cash even where cards are accepted, because signal fails. Bring your own bag. And if you love something at a maker market, buy it then, as most stallholders are there one weekend in the month.
