Summer at the top of Wisconsin is short and lovely, with July afternoons in the high 70s and nights in the low 50s, and winter is long, snowy and properly cold, with January lows below zero. Land O' Lakes weather sits at the cold end of the state, and it decides what you can do here more than almost anything else.
Below are the monthly averages, what each season is actually like on the ground, which businesses open and close with it, and where to check the live forecast and a lake webcam before you drive up.
Land O' Lakes weather by month
July is the warmest month, with an average high of 78°F and low of 51°F, and January is the coldest, with an average high of 19°F and low of -4°F. About 34 inches of rain and melted snow fall in a year, most of it from May through September.
| Month | Average high (°F) | Average low (°F) | Precipitation (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 19 | -4 | 1.4 |
| February | 20 | -2 | 1.1 |
| March | 34 | 8 | 1.9 |
| April | 49 | 25 | 2.5 |
| May | 64 | 36 | 3.5 |
| June | 75 | 47 | 4.2 |
| July | 78 | 51 | 4.5 |
| August | 74 | 48 | 4.0 |
| September | 67 | 41 | 3.7 |
| October | 54 | 33 | 3.0 |
| November | 37 | 19 | 2.2 |
| December | 25 | 6 | 1.6 |
Read the table in two halves. Average lows sit below freezing every month from November through April, and October's average low of 33°F is right on the line, so frost and snow are possible for half the year. July is both the warmest and the wettest month, at about 4.5 inches of rain, much of it in short afternoon storms rather than all-day rain.

Summer: June to August
Summer is the season for the lakes. Highs run from the mid 70s in June to the high 70s in July, and nights drop into the high 40s and low 50s, so pack a sweatshirt even in August. June through August are also the wettest months, with afternoon storms that build and pass.
This is when everything is open. The marina on the Cisco Chain runs from April through October, the museum keeps its summer hours from late June through Labor Day, and the lake resorts serve their full menus.
For a day on the water, pontoon delivery to any Vilas County launch works from spring into fall, and boating the Cisco Chain is at its best on calm July and August mornings. Bring bug spray for the woods and the evenings by the water, especially in June.
Fall: September and October
September highs average 67°F and October 54°F. With September lows averaging 41°F, frost is possible by the end of the month. Peak fall color in far northern Wisconsin usually arrives in the last week of September and the first week of October, according to the Wisconsin DNR, a few weeks ahead of the southern half of the state.
The town holds its Oktoberfest each September at the Snowflake ice rink downtown. By mid-October the campground has closed, the marina is winding down for winter storage, and some restaurants start cutting days.
Winter: November to March
Winter is long. Average highs stay below freezing from December through February, January lows average -4°F, and snow usually stays on the ground from late November into March or later.
Land O' Lakes often gets more snow than towns just to the south. In one early November storm in 2021, the National Weather Service measured 6.1 inches in Land O' Lakes while Rhinelander and Eagle River, 17 miles south, each got less than an inch.
That snow is why the town fills up again in winter. The Frosty Snowmobile Club grooms about 45 miles of trail that tie into Michigan, and Brew's Pub downtown sits right on trail #6. Cross-country ski trails run next to the Sylvania Wilderness, and the Three Bear Sled Dog Race comes to town in early February.
Drive with a winter kit in the car: a shovel, a blanket, a full tank and a charged phone. Roads are plowed, but the last miles to a cabin may not be cleared as fast as the highway.
How much snow to expect
Expect snow cover through the heart of winter rather than a few passing storms. In an early-January trail report from 2017, the Frosty trail system reported 10 to 16 inches of snow on the ground and good grooming, after a cold stretch with little new snow. That is a typical picture: a solid base that holds, topped up by smaller snowfalls.
February is the driest month on paper, at about 1.1 inches of precipitation, but cold, dry snow stays light and stacks up, so the trails often hold their best conditions through February. Check the club's trail report and the National Weather Service forecast before you trailer sleds up, since a midwinter thaw can change conditions in a day.
Spring: April and May
Spring comes late and in a hurry. April highs average 49°F with lows below freezing, and May jumps to 64°F. Ice-out on the lakes comes in spring on a schedule set by the winter before, so ask locally before you plan an early-season boat day, and expect muddy trails while the snow melts.
This is the quietest time of year. Trails close to sleds, the lakes are too cold to swim, and some businesses take a break before summer. It is a good season for empty roads and quiet trails, as long as you do not need everything to be open.
The paved bike trail through the pines is usually the first thing to dry out and the easiest outdoor plan in May.
What is open when
The weather sets the calendar for businesses too. Here is when the seasonal places run, so you can match a trip to what is open.
| Place | Season |
|---|---|
| McCormack's Cisco Chain Marina | April to October |
| Lac Vieux Desert Campground | Early May to mid-October |
| Sunrise Lodge dinner (resort guests) | May to October; breakfast year-round |
| Northern Waters Museum | Late June to Labor Day, Thursday to Saturday; by appointment otherwise |
| The Local Press Deli summer salads | Memorial Day to Labor Day |
| Frosty Snowmobile Club trails | When there is enough snow, typically midwinter |
Year-round anchors include the Gateway Lodge, the Pine Cone Cafe, The Sawbuck bakery and the historical society museum by appointment. Confirm hours before you drive, since small businesses here change them with the season.
The best time to visit, by trip
For swimming, boating and fishing, come in July or August, when the lakes are warmest and every business is open. Black Oak Lake's beach is at its best then.
For fall color, come in the last week of September or the first week of October, and book early, because that window is short. For snowmobiling and winter sports, January and February have the most reliable snow. For quiet, cheaper stays and open roads, try early June or September, after Labor Day and before the color crowds.
Whatever the season, plan your days with the trails, lakes and supper clubs that make up a Land O' Lakes trip, and check which ones are open that month.
Live forecast, radar and a lake webcam
For a live forecast, use the National Weather Service. Vilas County falls in the Green Bay office's forecast area, and its zone forecast covers Land O' Lakes along with Eagle River. Radar for the area comes from the same office.
For a real-time look at the conditions, Bent's Camp Resort runs a live webcam over Mamie Lake on the Cisco Chain. It shows you wind, ice and sky before you load the boat or the sled, and it is the most useful live view of the area.
Getting here in any season
Land O' Lakes is on US-45 at the Michigan line, and the nearest airline airport is Rhinelander, about 38 miles south-southwest. For roads, airports and how the town is laid out, see how to find Land O' Lakes on a map. In winter, add time for the last two-lane stretch north of Eagle River.
