Wittenberg Hotels (Plus Rustic Camping at Wilson Lake)

Two hotels and a lakeside county campground, where each one sits, what it offers and who it suits.

Booking sites will tell you Wittenberg has one hotel. It has two, plus a lakeside county campground, and none of them is in the downtown blocks. Wittenberg hotels sit out on the highways: the Best Western at the Highway 29 interchange, 2.5 miles east of downtown, and the Ho-Chunk Gaming hotel tower on US 45, 1.7 miles north.

Which one suits you depends on why you came. Casino weekend, golf and trail trip, or tent by the water: each has an obvious answer, laid out below with what each place actually offers and what reviewers complain about.

Where to stay in Wittenberg, the short version

Stay at the Best Western Wittenberg Inn for a quiet base near the interchange restaurants, at Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg if you are here to play the slots, and at Wilson Lake County Park if you are camping. If all three are full, the nearest larger hotel towns are Wausau and Weston to the west and Shawano to the east, each a little over 20 miles away.

You will need a car from any of them. The two hotels are about 3 miles apart, and neither is within an easy walk of the downtown murals or the bakery.

Best Western Wittenberg Inn

The Best Western Wittenberg Inn is the standard road-trip hotel, with an indoor pool, a hot tub and free breakfast, right off the Highway 29 and US 45 interchange.

The Best Western sits at W17267 Red Oak Ln on the interchange strip. Rooms come with free WiFi and parking, and there is an indoor pool, a hot tub, a fitness room and a small bar. It has more than 500 Google reviews at 4.2 stars.

Reviewers praise the cleanliness, the staff and the breakfast. The common complaints are that the building feels a bit dated for the price and that midweek rates can run higher than expected, so compare dates if you are flexible.

The location is the real selling point. Brianna's Cafe is about 0.15 miles away, close enough to walk for a 6am breakfast, and Rachel's Roadside Bar & Grill is about 0.4 miles away for dinner. Maple Hills Golf Course is about 0.7 miles from the hotel, so it is the natural pick for a golf trip.

It suits a family on the way up north, a couple doing the Nueske's run and the murals, or anyone riding the Wiouwash for a weekend.

The Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg hotel

The Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg hotel is a five-story tower attached to the casino, with 86 rooms split between 77 standard rooms and 9 suites, and a ground-floor pool.

Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg is at N7198 US-45, about 1.7 miles north of downtown and a mile north of Highway 29. The hotel opened in 2018 as part of a $33 million expansion that also added a conference room and gift shop.

Inside the same building are the River's Edge restaurant, the Forest Edge Snack Bar and the Village Bar on the casino floor. The casino stays open until 2am most nights and until 4am on Friday and Saturday.

The suites are the larger bay rooms at the ends of the tower. Members of the Ho-Chunk rewards program can earn free or discounted hotel nights and meals, and the card works at all six of the Nation's Wisconsin casinos.

It suits a casino weekend, obviously, and also a winter trip when you want a pool, dinner and entertainment without going back out into the snow. The Antigo chamber's lodging list tags it with snowmobile trail access, which matters from December to March.

The casino holds a 3.8-star average across more than 2,600 Google reviews, a mixed score typical of a busy gaming floor. If you do not plan to gamble, the Best Western is the quieter night.

Camping at Wilson Lake County Park

Wilson Lake County Park, 2.5 miles west of downtown on Oak Rd, is the camping option. The 110-acre county park has rustic campsites, restrooms, a small beach, a fishing pier and a boat ramp.

Park hours are 6am to 11pm. Panfish are the usual catch, and turtles are common in the lake.

Rustic means bring what you need. Ask Shawano County about site amenities, reservations and fees before you go, since the county sets the rules for its parks.

It suits a tent weekend with kids, a cheap base for the trail, or anyone who wants a lake view instead of a parking lot.

Vacation rentals and nearby motels

A handful of vacation rentals around Wittenberg list on Airbnb, including a well-reviewed country cottage on River Road. They suit groups and longer stays and book up early in summer.

In Birnamwood, 7.4 miles north, Chet & Emil's runs a small motel next to its long-running restaurant and bar on Main St, known for family-style chicken. It is basic, close to the Wiouwash trailhead, and a good fallback when the Wittenberg hotels are booked.

When to book

Book early for the June weekend of Wittenberg Community Days, the village's big festival weekend with the parade, fireworks and carnival, and for summer weekends generally. Two hotels do not take long to fill.

Fall brings color drives on Rustic Road 47, and winter brings the snowmobile season. Reviewers note the Best Western's midweek prices do not always drop below weekend rates.

The Best Western scores 8.6 out of 10 on Hotels.com across more than 600 reviews, and Ho-Chunk rewards members can earn free or discounted nights, so check the casino's offers before paying full rate.

Which Wittenberg hotel suits you

For a casino weekend, book Ho-Chunk. For golf, the trail or the Nueske's and murals trip, book the Best Western. For a tent and a lake, take Wilson Lake. A day in Wittenberg runs from the smokehouse to the disc golf course, and every option above puts you within a few miles of both.

Riders using a hotel as a trail base can park downtown and pick up the trail on Howard St, about 2.5 miles from the Best Western, or drive 3 miles north to the trail junction in Eland. Route details are in the northern Wiouwash State Trail through Wittenberg.

Getting to Wittenberg and getting around

Wittenberg sits at the junction of Highway 29 and US 45 in western Shawano County, about 21 miles east of Wausau and 61 miles west of Green Bay in a straight line. The nearest commercial airport is Central Wisconsin Airport in Mosinee, about 25 miles away.

Plan on driving everywhere, including to dinner. The interchange strip has its own cluster of places to eat, and Wittenberg's other downtown restaurants sit about 2.5 miles from the Best Western.
