Restaurants in Wittenberg (Friday Fish Fry Included)

Diner breakfasts, scratch cheese curds, Friday fish fry and Nueske's bacon to take home, with the days each kitchen is closed.

Eating out in Wittenberg runs on a simple schedule: breakfast at the diner downtown, burgers and cheese curds out by the highway, and fish fry on Friday nearly everywhere. There are about a dozen restaurants in Wittenberg and on its edges, counting the bars with real kitchens, and they split between the downtown blocks and the strip at the Highway 29 interchange, about 2.5 miles east.

The thing that trips up visitors is the calendar, not the menu. Monday is the thin day, when half the kitchens are dark. Every place below has its open days listed, taken from its Google listing in October 2026.

Breakfast and diners

For breakfast, the downtown choice is Wittenberg Family Restaurant and the interchange choice is Brianna's Cafe. Both are table-service diners with big plates and coffee that keeps coming.

Wittenberg Family Restaurant sits at 101 N Genesee St, on the corner where the downtown blocks start. It opens at 7am every day and closes at 3pm, except Friday, when it stays open until 8pm for fish fry.

Regulars order the chicken dumpling soup, the omelets and the breakfast skillets, and the coffee is ground fresh. If it is your birthday, mention it: reviewers say the ice cream is on the house. It has high chairs, a kids' menu and takes reservations, and its 560-plus Google reviews are the most of any downtown restaurant. Some reviewers note that evening hours can wind down earlier than posted, so call before a late Friday.

Brianna's Cafe on Red Oak Ln is the long-hours option, open 6am to 8pm every day of the week, which makes it the dependable sit-down dinner on a Monday outside the casino. It is a family restaurant with counter and table service, known for steak omelets and fried chicken, with lattes on the menu. It sits right next to the Best Western, so hotel guests can walk over.

Brianna's also offers paid showers, a detail that tells you who stops here: drivers coming off Highway 29 at all hours. Weekend mornings fill up, so come early if you want a booth.

Bar and grills with full kitchens

Wittenberg's bar and grills do most of the evening cooking. Rachel's Roadside out by the interchange is the busiest; Tavern Front downtown is the neighborhood one.

Rachel's Roadside Bar & Grill, on Spruce Rd off the interchange, is the most-reviewed spot in the area, with close to 1,000 Google reviews. The kitchen makes its cheese curds and soups from scratch, the burgers are half-pound, and the pizza is made to order at all open hours.

It is closed Monday. The kitchen runs Tuesday from 2pm to 9pm and Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 9pm, while the bar stays open until midnight or later. There is a fireplace, outdoor seating where dogs are allowed, and live music, karaoke and trivia on rotating nights. It is women-owned, and it is about 0.4 miles from the Best Western.

Order the beer fries alongside the curds. Rachel's takes reservations and has a full kids' menu, which helps on a Friday when the room is loud and the wait is long. Vegetarians will find slim pickings here, as at most Wisconsin bar and grills.

Downtown at 207 W Vinal St, Tavern Front serves burgers, wings, wraps, pizza and a Friday fish fry, with sports on the TVs, bar games and an outdoor area. It opens Wednesday and Thursday at 3pm and from 11am Friday through Sunday, and it is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Where to get a Friday fish fry

A Wisconsin fish fry is battered or breaded fish, usually cod, haddock, perch or bluegill, served Friday nights with coleslaw, rye bread and a choice of potato. It started as a meatless-Friday tradition and stuck.

Friday fish fry in Wittenberg means Wittenberg Lanes, Tavern Front, Mama's Place and the Family Restaurant's one late night of the week. It is the most Wisconsin meal on this list, and Friday is the one night you will find nearly every kitchen open.

Wittenberg Lanes at 407 Howard St is a bowling alley with a bar and a full kitchen, and its Friday fish fry draws a crowd. The rest of the menu is pizza, burgers, homemade soups, quesadillas and chicken sandwiches, with beer on tap and Bloody Marys.

It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am, with happy hour from 3pm to 6pm Tuesday through Friday. Locals knew it for years as Resch Lanes, and there has been bowling on this spot since 1948. One practical note: reviewers say the entrance is not wheelchair accessible.

The mailing address says Wittenberg, but Mama's Place sits in Elderon, about 4.7 miles southwest of downtown. It is a small bar with a kitchen, and its fish fry runs cod, haddock, perch and bluegill. It also pours a good old fashioned. It does not take reservations, so get there early on Friday.

Coffee in Wittenberg

Wittenberg has no dedicated coffee shop, so coffee comes from the diners and the bakery. Wittenberg Family Restaurant grinds its beans fresh and Brianna's makes lattes.

For coffee to go with something sweet, Lisa's opens at 6am on weekdays and sells coffee alongside its baked goods. On a Sunday or Monday, when Lisa's is closed, the diners are your only cup.

Taverns for a drink

Xena's Village Inn at 500 S Webb St is the downtown tavern: pool tables, sports and a long bar. It opens at 3pm Monday to Friday and at 11am on weekends, and it is one of the few places in the village open on a Monday night.

Its outside wall carries a 2007 mural by Milwaukee artist Reynaldo Hernandez showing the people who worked at and drank in the tavern over the years. That wall is one stop on the Walls of Wittenberg mural walk through downtown.

Google lists Xena's as a bar, with drinks rather than a kitchen, so eat first and come for the pool table and the conversation.

Bakery, ice cream and food to take home

The bakery, the ice cream counter and the Nueske's store are where Wittenberg's food goes home with you. Lisa's and Nueske's are carry-out only, and Britt's has a few seats inside.

Britt's Candy & Ice Cream at 602 E Grand Ave does soft serve, custard and scooped ice cream, plus candy and a short sandwich menu. The rhubarb sundae is the order to try. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm, and reviewers mention free samples and low prices.

Lisa's Sweet Shoppe Bakery at 410 Howard St is takeout only, with no seating. It opens at 6am Tuesday to Friday and closes at 5pm, and on Saturday it runs 6am to noon. Lisa's also caters, from sandwich bars to plated prime rib dinners, and makes wedding cakes and cheese and sausage trays.

The Nueske's Company Store at 1390 E Grand Ave is the stop for applewood-smoked bacon, ham and sausage, with cheese and crackers on the shelves. It is open Monday to Saturday and closed Sunday, with a late close of 7pm on Fridays.

Eating at Ho-Chunk Gaming

The River's Edge, the sit-down restaurant inside Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg north of town, opened with the casino's 2018 expansion as a three-meal dining room. There is also the Forest Edge Snack Bar for quick food and the Village Bar on the casino floor.

Rewards points can go toward meals. Restaurant hours change, so check the casino's site before you drive up. If you are staying over, the Ho-Chunk hotel tower is in the same building.

Chains near the highway

McDonald's and Taco John's sit side by side on N Genesee St near the north end of the village, and there is a Subway on the same street. They are the fast option when the diners have closed for the afternoon.

Worth the drive for dinner

In Birnamwood, 7.4 miles north, Chet & Emil's is a sit-down restaurant and bar known for family-style chicken and haddock-and-chicken combos. It is open seven days, with long bar hours later in the week.

Wittenberg has no supper club of its own. The nearest on this site is The Palms Supper Club in Weston, about 22 miles west, a traditional steak house with a circular bar. Reservations help on weekends.

In Tigerton, 7.5 miles southeast, the pasty counter at Rocks For Fun sells homemade frozen pasties to take home and is closed on Tuesdays.

Which restaurants are open on Monday

On a Monday in Wittenberg, your sit-down choices are Wittenberg Family Restaurant until 3pm, Brianna's Cafe until 8pm, the casino restaurant and Xena's from 3pm for drinks. Rachel's, Tavern Front, Wittenberg Lanes, Britt's and Lisa's are all closed.

Tuesday is better but not complete: Tavern Front and Britt's still stay shut. Plan around that, and there is plenty to do in Wittenberg between meals.
