Fish and chips in Martinborough is an early-evening meal. For fish and chips, go to AHOY or Joe Kwong On on Jellicoe Street. For Thai, Siam Kitchen on the Square. For Indian, Aroma India on Jellicoe Street. For wood-fired pizza, Colombo on Friday and Saturday. For burgers, the Social Chef food truck outside the brewery.
Everything except the pizza is within about 300 metres of the Square, so the easy plan on a fine evening is to collect your food and eat it on the grass under the trees. The Square has picnic tables, and it is the town's unofficial dining room on a summer night.
Fish and chips
Two shops on Jellicoe Street fry fish and chips, and between them they cover every night except Monday.
A few doors further along the same street, the second chip shop keeps later hours and adds a Chinese menu.
So on a Tuesday, AHOY is your fish and chips. On a Wednesday to Sunday evening after 7.30pm or 8pm, it is Joe Kwong On. On a Monday, neither is open.
Thai and Indian
Siam Kitchen on the Square and Aroma India on Jellicoe Street both cook to order for takeaway and delivery, and between them they are open every night of the week.
Siam Kitchen, at 2 to 4 Memorial Square, cooks classic Thai: pad Thai, massaman curry and stir-fries such as garlic and pepper chicken, for dine-in, takeaway and delivery. It is open every day until 9pm, and until 10pm on Sunday.
Aroma India, at 13 Jellicoe Street, mixes its own spices and makes its own paneer, and cooks each dish to order, so allow a little time on a busy night. It opens for dinner every evening from 4.30pm to 9.30pm, and for lunch from Wednesday to Sunday, with delivery and takeaway.
For modern Thai, Soi-3 on Kitchener Street and Tōhi on Cambridge Road are sit-down restaurants; ask whether they will do your order to take away. The sit-down restaurants around the Square are the next step up when you want a table.
Pizza
For pizza, Colombo on Todds Road fires its wood oven for takeaway and delivery on Friday and Saturday, from 11am to 7pm.
Some older guides still list a pizza shop on the Square that has since closed permanently. On other nights, Union Square in the Martinborough Hotel and the Circus Cinema both serve pizza to eat in.
Burgers, pies and fried chicken
For burgers, the Social Chef food truck parks outside Martinborough Brewery on Ohio Street on Friday from 2pm to 6pm and Saturday from noon to 6pm, and serves burgers and fries with its own seasoning. The Social Chef truck pairs well with a beer from the brewery's taproom next to it.
In the daytime, The Bach at 1 Jellicoe Street sells pies, toasties, hot and crispy fried chicken and chips, from 9.30am on weekdays and until 2.30pm on Saturday. It is closed on Sunday. For a pie for the road, the bakery and cafés near the Square open early.
Takeaways for a group or a holiday house
If you are feeding a group at a holiday house, order early and order ahead. Small kitchens slow down fast when three big orders land at 6.30pm.
Aroma India caters for large groups and individual orders, and cooks each dish to order, so ring well before you want to eat. Siam Kitchen takes orders online for takeaway and delivery. Colombo delivers its pizzas on Friday and Saturday. For a mixed group, fish and chips from AHOY or Joe Kwong On with a curry from Aroma India covers most tastes, and both shops are on the same street.
Vegetarian options
Aroma India is the strongest choice for vegetarians, since it makes its own paneer and cooks everything to order. Joe Kwong On's corn fritters and kūmara chips are a solid chip-shop meal without meat, and at Siam Kitchen, ask about vegetarian versions of the stir-fries and curries when you order.

If you want a glass of wine with it, pick up a bottle before the Wine Merchants on Kitchener Street closes at 6pm, and check the local rules on drinking in public places before you open it on the Square. On a cold night, most places to stay have a kitchen or a table, and Siam Kitchen, Aroma India and Colombo all deliver.
Supermarket and late supplies
For anything else, the Four Square is the supermarket, and it is the place for drinks, snacks and breakfast supplies. The Grocer on Kitchener Street has deli food, cheese and baking for a platter, and is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
For a full evening plan, fish and chips on the Square before a film at the Circus Cinema is hard to beat. The rest of an evening in Martinborough is a short walk away.
