Live Music in Sheboygan: 9 Rooms, Patios and a Vineyard

The Weill, Paradigm, the lakeside patios, Elkhart Lake’s resort bars, a ballroom, The Wharf and SoLu’s weekend sets, counted and located.

Sheboygan does not have a music district, and that is exactly why people miss it. The live music Sheboygan County has on offer is spread along a 25-mile stretch of Lake Michigan shore and farmland, from a restored theater downtown to resort bars on two lakes, a riverside club in Manitowoc and a winery in Cascade that books more bands than anywhere else in the county.

This guide counts them: nine stages worth knowing, with what each is like, when it has music, and how far it is from downtown Sheboygan.

Live music in Sheboygan County at a glance

Three of the nine are in downtown Sheboygan or on its lakefront, within a mile of each other. Two are at Elkhart Lake, 16 miles west, and the rest are scattered: a barn in Oostburg to the south, a ballroom in Johnsonville, a riverside club in Manitowoc to the north and a winery in Cascade to the southwest.

Summer is when all nine are busy, and several of them only really run from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In winter, the Weill, Paradigm, the Elk Room, The Wharf and SoLu’s indoor sets carry the county.

1. Weill Center for the Performing Arts

The Stefanie H. Weill Center on North 8th Street is downtown Sheboygan’s restored theater and the county’s main concert room. It books live music, ballet companies and theater, with touring names and local productions through the year.

It is the room for a seated night out, and the downtown restaurants around it make it easy to turn a show into an evening.

A block south on the same street, Downtown 925 is a reimagined classic Wisconsin supper club, with prime steaks and seafood, and it has started booking early-evening music on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. For a pre-show dinner with a band in the corner, it is the obvious choice.

2. Paradigm Coffee and Music

Paradigm on North 8th Street is a coffee shop with the word music in its name for a reason. It serves coffee, sandwiches and bagels by day and puts on live music as a community space for local players.

It is the gentlest way into Sheboygan’s music: no bar, no cover, and a room where people actually listen.

3. Blue Harbor Resort

Blue Harbor Resort sits on the Lake Michigan shore half a mile from downtown, a big modern resort with an indoor water park and a conference center. In summer it runs a Lakeside Live Music Series on the patio outside its On the Rocks Bar & Grill, from 7 to 10pm, weather permitting, and you do not need to be a guest to go.

A band, a drink and the lake going dark behind the stage is about as good as a summer weeknight in Sheboygan gets.

4. Blue Barn on the Green

Blue Barn on the Green on Cole Road outside Oostburg, about 10 miles southwest of downtown, is a restored late 19th-century barn on more than 10 acres, and most of the time it is a wedding and event venue. A few times a summer, though, it opens its patio for an afternoon concert with a local band, food and drinks. Those days are worth watching for: it is a beautiful place to hear music, and the crowds are small. It is worth checking the listing before your summer plans are set.

5. The Elk Room at The Osthoff

The Elk Room at The Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, 16 miles west of Sheboygan, is a bar with a big fireplace that serves coffee and pastries in the morning and cocktails and craft beer later in the day. In the evenings it books acoustic players and two-piece bands, and it is open to the public, not just resort guests.

In summer, The Osthoff also runs free concerts on its Lake Deck, with the sun setting over Elkhart Lake, and ticketed shows in its conference center.

6. The Tiki Bar at Elkhart Lake

On the other side of the village, The Tiki Bar at the Elkhart Lake Beach Resort sits right on the water, with specialty tiki drinks and live music through the summer. Between the Elk Room, the Lake Deck and the Tiki Bar, Elkhart Lake has more summer music per resident than anywhere else in the county, and on a summer evening you can walk between all three.

7. Laack’s Ballroom

The old Laack’s Tavern & Ballroom in Johnsonville, about 10 miles west of Sheboygan, is now Willow Falls of Johnsonville, a banquet hall with a ballroom, a biergarten, a gazebo and a fireside lounge. Mostly it hosts weddings and gatherings, but it still puts on public music nights through the fall.

The Laack’s name goes back a long way in Johnsonville, and a public night in the ballroom is a small piece of that history. Check the listing for the next one.

8. The Wharf, Manitowoc

The Wharf on Quay Street in Manitowoc, about 24 miles north of Sheboygan, is a restaurant, bar and live music venue on the waterfront, serving perch sandwiches, perch tacos and a bee-sting pizza alongside the cocktails.

It is the lakeshore’s riverside club: eat early, stay for the band, and walk out to the river afterwards. Manitowoc is also where the SS Badger car ferry crosses to Michigan in summer, so The Wharf makes a good last night before a morning crossing.

9. SoLu Estate Winery & Meadery, Cascade

SoLu Estate Winery & Meadery on County Road F in Cascade, about 21 miles west of Sheboygan, books more live music than almost anywhere in the county. In season there is an early-evening set on Thursdays and Fridays, usually from around 5:30pm, and two sets each on Saturday and Sunday, one around lunchtime and one mid-afternoon.

The acts range from brass bands and blues to tribute nights, and you come for the wines and meads and stay for the second set. The listing shows what is on this week.

SoLu’s calendar runs from late summer well into the fall, which makes it one of the few places in the county where you can count on live music on an October weekend. If you are planning a Saturday in Sheboygan County, it is worth putting a SoLu afternoon set and an evening at the Weill or The Wharf in the same day.

Free summer concerts on City Green

From June to August, the Levitt AMP Sheboygan Music Series puts free concerts on City Green in downtown Sheboygan on Thursday evenings, with touring and regional bands and a crowd that brings lawn chairs and picnic dinners. It is the biggest free music night in the county and a short walk from the Weill and Paradigm.

After the music, the downtown bars are a few minutes away, with brewpubs and old corner taverns among Sheboygan’s bars.

A summer Saturday across the county

With nine stages spread over 25 miles, the best way to do Sheboygan County’s music is to string a few of them into one day.

Start in Cascade at SoLu for the early-afternoon set, with a glass of mead and the farmland around you. Drive east to Elkhart Lake for a swim and an early dinner, then catch the Tiki Bar’s evening set on the water, or wander over to The Osthoff for music on the Lake Deck while the sun goes down.

If you would rather end the night in town, skip the swim and head to downtown Sheboygan instead: dinner at Downtown 925, a show at the Weill, and a nightcap at one of the bars around 8th Street. On a Thursday, swap the Weill for the free Levitt concert on City Green.

Whatever the route, keep one person off the drinks. The county roads are dark and the distances add up.

Getting around the county

Downtown Sheboygan, Blue Harbor and City Green are all walkable from each other. Everything else needs a car, and the drives are on two-lane county roads, so plan a driver or stay close by. Elkhart Lake makes a good base for a weekend: two of the nine stages are there, and The Osthoff and the Beach Resort both have rooms.

Fond du Lac is about 22 miles west of Elkhart Lake, with a couple of Main Street bars that book bands, covered alongside Oshkosh in Fond du Lac’s bar stages.

Sheboygan County is 50 miles north of Milwaukee, and the lakeshore is one stretch of venues that run from Milwaukee to Door County.
