About

Vernon County Museum and History Center is a history museum in Viroqua. Our exhibits feature authentic artifacts, offering easy-to-read explanations of local history. We offer coloring sheets and historical hats for children, along with a gift shop that includes books for all ages. Our team operates four historical sites, including the Vernon County Museum, Old St. Mary's Church Museum, the Foreaker One Room Schoolhouse, and the historic Sherry-Butt House. We recently installed a new HVAC system, providing climate-controlled upper levels of exhibits. Visitors can explore records, such as those for teaching certificates from 1936, or learn about specific historical events like a Norwegian Regiment's role in the Civil War.

If you like history this is the right place for you. Everything on display with easy to read explanations. There's a lot to do for kids, like colouring sheets and hats to try on . All authentic artefacts collected by the museum. In front of the museum is the oldest Gingko tree in the town. The gift shop has a variety of books and gifts also for kids available.

Very interesting little local museum. We would have stayed longer, but it was a little warm upstairs (it was almost 90 outside) and we had more to do in town. That said, we were there for about 1.5 hours and there was another 1-1.5 hours worth of content we could have enjoyed. Next time!

A bit hot on the upper level on a 90 degree day because its not air conditioned. But, they did warn us and there were fans on the upper level. Excellent area history museum that seems well-curated. We spent a couple hours here and greatly enjoyed learning more about the Viroqua and Vernon County area.

Thank you to the lovely folks who made us feel so welcome! We made an unexpected stop here to take pictures of where my grandmother earned her teaching certificate in 1936. The museum was closed and they graciously reopened and showed us the records for my grandmother's class! We'll stop again when it's open and take a tour through.

Terrific, comprehensive number of exhibits (fills three floors!) and very helpful staff to research family history. Much more interesting than the typical historical society. Can't say enough good things about this place.
