The forest is so pretty, peaceful. There is a couple nice bridges over the streams running through. The bridges have little ridges to help climb.
Hiking trails and streams with bridges in Viroqua
Duck Egg County Forest is a park in Viroqua with varied trails. We offer paths through hilly terrain, open fields, and forests, including some with stream crossings and footbridges. We feature the Springville Branch of the Bad Axe River, known for its cold-water springs and abundant trout, offering a prime fishing experience.

Duck Egg is a pretty cool place. The drive in to the lower parking is on a kinda tight bendy road. A bridge crosses the river and plenty of parking is there. A porta potty starts the beginning of the trail head. The main trails vary from hilly to open fields to forest and are open to people and people on horseback. Footbridges allow for passage over the creek in various spots along the trail as it leads to the reservoir. This marks the end of the lower part of the Springville branch and on the other side of the earthen dam is the upper stretch of the Springville branch. The park itself would be a solid 4 but that gets bumped up 1 because of the Springville Branch of the Bas Axe River. Cold water springs feed the river, mass amounts of food available feed the trout. Riffles, pools and short runs dot the river. Gravel and rock bottom, sand, weed growth, plenty of downed timber...I think you get the point. All this equals trout nirvana, seriously. 90's and mile high skies accompanied me. The creek was low and clear and the trout had super vision. I learned quickly that the trout here are like bees, spook one and the whole lot of them get into a tizzy. Not just a few but dozens, bolting every which way. But when a stealthy approach was successful, fish on and lots of them. The entire driftless area has plenty of streams like this and are a complete blast to fish. Duck Egg might not be the coolest name but it has a bad axe creek running through it. I will always come back to this place.
Good hiking, some trails have stream crossings with no bridges (e.g. stagecoach trail) and that could be better marked for hikers.
Duck Egg County Forest has some of the most beautiful geographic features Wisconsin has to offer, and I don't say that lightly! The 3.5mi Duck Egg trail take you through several large valleys, right up to a scenic bluff, down into the lower valleys, and then back up again. It's pretty strenuous, and the trails are rocky, so I wouldn't recommend taking this trail unprepared (water, good shoes, snacks) or after rain. We had the entire forest to ourselves and it almost felt like surreal to have so much to take in for just two little hikers.
Very nice trail from upper parking area down some rocky switchbacks to the valley floor and the creek.
