Bike or walk through historic rock tunnels on our 32.5-mile trail

About

Elroy-Sparta Trail Norwalk Trail is a park in Norwalk. We offer access to the first rail-to-trail in the United States, stretching 32.5 miles with three rock tunnels between Sparta and Elroy. We are a favorite Wisconsin bicycling destination, passing through communities like Norwalk, Wilton, and Kendall. Our trail is open year-round for visitors to enjoy. We provide amenities such as a self-pay station and a bike tool station at our Norwalk access point, making it convenient to start your journey. Along the route, we feature wetlands, prairies, farmland, and unglaciated areas.

Great place to bike on an old railroad bed. We made it through the tunnels and over 30 miles of biking.

Trail is well kept and easy to ride on or walk. Wide enough for passing other trail goers. We rode from Norwalk to the west most tunnel and back. It was amazing. Just over six and a half miles from parking to far end of tunnel and back. It's also just over two hundred feet incline in the three miles. So, it's barely above flat. Easy for even my six year old. Norwalk has a couple of gas stations and bar/ grills for eating and drinking or gearing up for the ride with snacks. Parking was great and almost on top of the trail. The way back from the tunnel goes smooth and brisk as it's all at a slight decline. No need to worry about tiring yourself out and not being able to make it back. The lead up to the tunnel is very cool as the trail starts to cut into the earth and the ground rises above you on each side. The tunnel was over 3000 feet long and my entire family's favorite part. The ground water dripped on us constantly, but not enough to be bothersome. It is much cooler in the tunnel, but none of us felt the need for warmer clothing. It's also dark dark in there, so bring headlamps because in the middle of the tunnel, you can see both ends, but they offer no real light. The tunnel is also the best chance you have at twisting an ankle or slipping if you're clumsy like myself. The hard rock path and ground water streams on both sides are not as even and flat as the trail. The entrances made for some of the best family pictures we've ever taken on an outing. County parks put up a selfy stand at each entrance for timed family photos. All in all, it was an amazing trip. We will be going back!

Great place to pick up the trail and closest point to ride to Tunnel 1 and 2. There is a self pay station as well as a little station with tools to work on your bike if needed. Highly recommend!
