We love this tunnel! It is wet and dark and really fun! It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to walk through. You can feel the cool air from the tunnel before you even see it!
Experience the dark, cool air of this historic railway tunnel
Elroy-Sparta State Trail Tunnel 3 is a historic tourist attraction in Norwalk. One of three rock tunnels along the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, it offers a unique 3,820-foot walk through a former railway passage. Our team maintains this section of the trail, which requires a state trail pass for bicycling, and welcomes visitors year-round to explore its cool, damp interior.

VERY creepy! Wear shoes, NO flip flops or sandals. Make sure yo have a headlamp or flashlight. 3900 foot walk to the other side. Very cool inside and can be slippery.
We were camping at Wildcat Mountain state park. On a warm day we decided to hike to tunnel #3. It was short hike to tunnel from road. Could use some better parking. It was about a mile and a half hike from truck through the tunnel. It was worth it. The temperature drops quite a bit. Water does drip down but felt great because is was very warm the day we were there. You could feel the cool air from the tunnel about 200 yards away. That was cool. Also fog was forming outside the tunnel. We had a nice walk. Bring a light. The tunnel is 3820 feet long.
This old train tunnel is a hidden gem, built in 1833 and still standing strong despite the water running down its walls. It's a magical spot on the bike trail, and with a flashlight, it takes on an otherworldly feel. Totally into it.
We rode from the Norwalk trailhead to Tunnel 3. I highly recommend this route! It was a slow, steady, doable 3.5-mile uphill ride most of the way out, which means the return trip was a breeze! 👍 Tunnel 3 was long and drippy, but definitely worth checking out.
