Spier Wine Farm is a winery in Stellenbosch. We offer a range of wine tasting options including our Signature wines, premium ranges like 21 Gables, and an organic wine tasting featuring six wines from our regenerative farming practices. We also host chocolate and wine pairings. Our farm provides various activities such as Segway vineyard tours and preordered picnic baskets that can be enjoyed in our gardens. The farm features a lake with ample space for picnics and a deck with lounge seating. We are a regenerative wine farm focused on environmental stewardship, with our cellar situated within 650 hectares of restored indigenous renosterveld and fynbos.
A wonderful place for day visitors. No entry fee, the wines are sold at supermarket prices and the food is excellent. A beautiful lake with ample space for a picnic, also has a deck with lounge seating beside the lake. Lots of open space for families and kids.

Went to Spier Wine Farm Lights Show for the first time and it was great! Genuinely was a good first time experience and is very family friendly. The staff was excellent and helpful. The artwork is was out of this world and showed how talented the people of South Africa are. Can’t wait for the next visit.

So beautiful and well put together. We preordered the picnic basket and it was so delicious! Many nice spots you can find in the garden.

1. Variety of Tasting Options
• They have a solid “Spier Tasting” that gives you a good cross-section: Signature wines plus premium ranges like 21 Gables, Creative Block, and Seaward.
• For something more fun / indulgent, there’s a chocolate & wine pairing.
• If you’re into organic and more terroir-driven wines, their Organic Wine Tasting is great: six wines that reflect their regenerative farming.
• There’s even a wine blending experience, which is really cool for a group or for people who want a hands-on feel.
2. Atmosphere & Setting
• The tasting room is light-filled, airy, and overlooks a dam, so it’s very relaxing.
• There’s a terrace with lovely views (Helderberg mountains + dam), which makes it a very scenic place to sip wine.
• They also have platters (cheese, charcuterie, olives) which pair really well with the tasting.
3. Sustainability & Ethos
• Spier is serious about regenerative farming and long-term environmental stewardship.
• Their approach feels authentic: they’re not just “green-washing” — they invest in soil health, biodiversity, and community.
• This adds a deeper layer to the tasting: when you taste their wine, you’re also tasting a philosophy of sustainability.
4. Good for Different Types of Visitors
• Whether you’re a wine newbie or more experienced, there’s something for you.
• The farm is family-friendly: they have a grape-juice tasting for kids.
• There are extra activities (e.g., Segway tours) if you want to make your visit more than just wine tasting.
5. Well-Run Tasting Room & Good Service
• According to their website, the tasting space is well designed, and staff are likely knowledgeable (given the variety of tasting options).
• The platters, the setting, and the wine list suggest they take the visitor experience seriously.

Spier is a historic wine cellar located just outside Stellenbosch, making it an excellent destination for a family day out. Visitors can enjoy picnicking on one of the oldest farms in the region. There is a playground for children, and the lawn next to the picnic area is as large as a soccer field, providing ample space for kids to burn off energy. The picnic area offers various options for creating your picnic basket. Outdoor seating is available on the "werf," and you can bring your picnic blanket to sit on the grass, especially during the summer. However, please note that bringing your own food is not allowed; instead, you should treat yourself and your family to the offerings available at the picnic area.
Spier is a large complex worth exploring, with a strong focus on history and art. Numerous artworks by both well-known and local artists are displayed in the old wine cellar. Additionally, there is a craft market that showcases the talents of various artisans.
Spier’s website can help you plan your visit, given the numerous activities and sights available. To save time, it’s recommended to visit the website beforehand.
