Raka Wines is a hidden gem in the Western Cape and well worth the drive, especially if you're staying in the Hermanus area. Unlike some of the larger, more commercial wine estates around Stellenbosch or Durbanville, Raka offers a far more relaxed and authentic experience, tucked away between the mountains in beautiful countryside. The drive itself is part of the attraction. It's scenic, peaceful and refreshingly free from the commercial feel of some of the more popular wine routes. Most of the seating is outdoors beneath a natural canopy of grapevines, providing plenty of shade and creating a wonderfully tranquil setting. There is also ample parking and a small kiddies' play area at the front of the venue—nothing elaborate, but more than enough to keep younger children entertained while the adults enjoy a tasting. We visited as a group of eight to ten people without a reservation and had no difficulty getting a table. The wine tastings were excellent, accompanied by delicious snack platters that paired perfectly with the wines. I've noticed a few reviews suggesting that the tasting experience can vary, but our experience couldn't have been more different. The staff member who hosted our tasting had a fantastic sense of humour that really suited our group, making the afternoon relaxed, entertaining and memorable. As with any wine farm, personalities differ, so I'd encourage people to judge the experience for themselves rather than relying too heavily on a handful of negative reviews. The wines themselves are also a little different from what many visitors may be used to in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. The estate grows varieties that suit its own unique terroir, giving visitors the opportunity to experience something a little different from the more familiar Cape wine routes. Before leaving, it's worth browsing the small curio and wine shop. In addition to standard 750 ml bottles, you'll often find larger formats such as Magnums (1.5 L) and other collector-sized bottles available, making for a great souvenir or gift. Overall, Raka offers exactly what many people look for in a wine farm—a beautiful setting, excellent wines, friendly hospitality and a relaxed atmosphere without feeling commercialised. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would happily return.

We did the wine and ice cream paring (R130), not worth it, as the wines offered with the pairing are the very worst of the wine farm. We would recommend not to offer white or rose wines, as it damages a bit the image of the brand. They also offer cheese pairing. The red wines on the other side, are some of the best we tasted, in the second tasting we chose 3 of the red wines (R 20 each). The biography Shiraz is one of my favorite red wines. 100% recommendable!!

It was lovely to finally visit the farm behind a wine brand I've come to notice in stores. The wine and cheese tasting was thoroughly enjoyable, offering a great way to sample their offerings. Even though it was quite quiet during our visit, the service was prompt and attentive. A real highlight for collectors is that they sell different sized bottles of their collector's wine—a nice touch for enthusiasts! My only suggestion would be for the venue to give the decor a bit of attention to match the quality of the wine. Overall, definitely worth a stop for the tasting!

I had the Raka Wines Wine & Ice Cream Tasting – A Sweet Surprise in the Valley🥰 Tucked away between the mountains and vineyards near Stanford, Raka Wines offers more than just your usual wine tasting – they’ve taken it up a notch with a wine and ice cream pairing that’s both playful and sophisticated. From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed by panoramic views of rolling vineyards and the majestic Kleinriver Mountains. The tasting room is warm and inviting, with friendly staff who walk you through the wine and ice cream pairings like it’s a delicious adventure. Unexpected but delightful – think rich Shiraz paired with dark chocolate ice cream, or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc alongside a citrus sorbet. Each spoonful brings out new notes in the wine, and the combination is a total treat for the senses. The sweetness of the ice cream complements the wine’s tannins and acidity in a way that feels indulgent but clever. The Vibe Relaxed, scenic, and well thought out. You can sit back with your wine, take in the fresh air, and soak up the views – it’s a perfect spot for a lazy afternoon with friends or a special outing. My thoughts: Raka’s wine and ice cream tasting is more than just a novelty – it’s an experience that lingers. It’s fun, it’s fresh, and it’s the kind of thing that makes you appreciate wine from a whole new angle. Highly recommended if you’re in the Overberg area and looking for something a little different! Ps: Well priced for such a great experience 😜
