We attended brother-in-laws 80th birthday lunch. First-time visitors. Splendid gardens - even in winter. Impressive temporary tent after fire damaged main building. Excellent service & food. A new & very pleasant experience.

Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West is a fantastic wine estate with beautiful gardens, historic buildings, wine tasting, restaurants, picnic baskets, ice cream, a children’s play area, and more. The estate offers peaceful walks through gardens and next to the river, plus guided heritage and hiking tours. It has enormous Camphor trees planted in 1700, alongside an ancient Yellowwood, the oldest living oak in Africa, and a historic White Mulberry tree. It is a must-visit in the Cape Winelands.

What a stunner of an estate! The views are breathtaking and the restaurants and service is impeccable. There is a R30 access fee per car but you can visit the Manor house, walk the trials and enjoy some coffee at Rose Terrace Cafe. Will be back soon for some wine tasting soon

Definitely well worth a visit and a must see when in the area. The gardens are absolutely beautiful with 300 year old magnificent trees. It’s definitely child friendly and there’s a wonderful playing area for them. There is a tea room (with incredible cakes), the fire horse restaurant (a pop up restaurant whilst the stable restaurant is being restored) and a lovely gift shop (I can recommend the nougat and chocolate). We absolutely loved the food at the fire horse. We went for brunch and it was the best avo on toast and French toast that we’ve ever had. The staff are extremely welcoming and friendly. You can do wine tastings (as far as I know only on a Friday) and a picnic for which we will definitely be back. The library and Manor House is also well worth a visit. The guides at the Manor House and Library were particularly friendly and informative. It’s so wonderful to see the estate so well maintained. Just be sure to have cash at hand as it’s a R30 entrance fee for adults and R10 for pensioners.

A picnic at Vergelegen Wine Estate is less an outing and more an experience steeped in heritage, beauty, and quiet indulgence. The picnic offering itself is elegant and well curated. Baskets are generously filled with fresh, seasonal produce and beautifully prepared items that reflect the estate’s commitment to quality. Simple yet sophisticated. Service is seamless and attentive without being intrusive, and the overall experience feels polished yet relaxed. Definitely 5 stars!
