Producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

About

Whalehaven Winery is a winery in Onrusrivier. We specialize in small-batch Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, reflecting the region's cool-climate and coastal influences. Our winery was the third producer in the area, situated at the gateway to the valley. We offer wines for purchase and provide tastings of our red wines. Customers can visit our wine shop during open hours.

Not my favourite winery in the Hemel en Aarde but it is very handy if you want to call in as driving past, as it’s in the wine village at the bottom of the valley. I was disappointed that they didn’t have their new, highly rewarded Chardonnays to taste. They did pour some older red wines, but not sure they showed the winery in its best light. If you only have a day in the region, then I wouldn’t prioritise Whalehaven

We did the flagship tasting, we tasted 4 wines, not very surprised to be honest. The ambience was not helping, the staff was not in the mood on wine tasting, no explanations of the wines, which makes the experience a bit boring. It was the most expensive tasting we did in the area and unfortunately not worth it. Good to stop by if you don’t have enough time to go to the wine farms, as it is located very centric, and near the wine valley (where you can do some wine shopping).

Popped in enroute to Pearly Beach to get some refreshments for the weekend. The attendant was friendly, helpful and very interactive. The wine is excellent. Their Pinot Noir particularly is very lovely and recommended by many, as the Hemel and aarde Valley has the most favourable climate to grow this cultivar in SA. Will definitely stop again!

Great wines. Did the tasting, the lady was helpful and knowledgeable. And brought some, they have really old wines on sale at good prices. The 2012 Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon blend was a surprise. Apparently the bottles were not retailed at the time due to spelling mistakes in the label. They found it later in the back of the cellar. I got it for R120 a bottle definitely worth it. After the tasting, try the bakery next door for good food.

We popped in for the wine and chocolate tasting and ended up pairing the wine and chocolate with the wine and jam tasting as well, it was absolutely fantastic!! Everything is served beautifully and the server is very knowledgeable about each and every wine served and explained each taste in such a beautiful way that you could nearly taste it before the glass ever touched your lips. The seating area is very simple but elegant and very comfortable and the view is gorgeous. The pricing for the tasting is far from expensive especially considering what a lovely experience it was. We luckily caught them on a quiet day so we had the servers full attention and didn't have to wait for anything at all. Loved it and will definitely recommend to anyone looking to do a quick tasting in the area and will absolutely be bringing my friends by as well!!
