Amazing library period. Spacious kids playroom with tons of toys, tent, reading nook. Cute xmas craft table with excellent art supplies for DIY ornaments.

So pleased to meet the welcoming librarians downstairs, & Mrs. K in the children's library. She was very helpful, & Imogene enjoyed reading some books & being able to borrow one to take home. The story walk and the big cat statue were really cool! Really lovely, big library for a small town!

On a recent trip to research my 7th great grandfather, I had the great good fortune to stop into this library. The staff was friendly and extremely helpful. They dug out books and reference entries covering my family during the early 1700's. Further, they were able to point me to the cemetery across the street where William Martin was buried in 1715. Nice people. Stop by and say hello for me.

The wifi is available, but it won't reach the whole building, which is two stories and about 6000 sq. ft. I come here often enough, and a good few of the librarians are rather gregarious, and would be even in a space not designed for quiet work. Their boisterousness is like a recrudescent problem. I have object-permanence and am always surprised how chatty they are, but I'd feel ashamed to ask them to be quiet, considering I'd have trouble restraining myself from upbraiding them and starting a tiff if they didn't comply. Furthermore, I'm not here constantly, and they are older librarians who have obviously hardened poor technique (growing up I was inspired by some librarians' ability to communicate softly and quickly), thus I hardly expect any polite request for at least whispering be heeded for long. So here I am with earplugs. Anyways, they have a few decent subscriptions - The Economist, notably. They do the usual display of terrible writing seasoned with good books near the entrance, which is a shame, given poor writing really gives reading a bad name, and the disproportionate dearth of good books is quite drowned out by the loud covers of those raffish writings de rigueur (vampires, cliché American history and Abrahamic religions, anyone?). There is a room in the back that perennially exhibits local artists, and there are other galleries along main street for fine art, too. Pardon the sardonic review, but the librarians have nearly started harmonizing as I've been writing this, which has embittered this critique's flavor. Thursday nights some of the older folks from town hold a 'Road Scholar' discussion, or so I think it's called, but it's eponymous, it's a discussion on travel, with a cadre of socialists chipping in every so often, as they did a few weeks ago, extolling the virtues of 20th century East Asian political movements (famine apparently was not on any of their minds, being the discussions include hors d'oeuvres). I couldn't hold my tongue from caviling with their ineptitude, and I felt such ignominy by my lack of self-restraint, so I haven't returned for another discussion. That was my second one, the first was a week prior and quite a hit in my book (pun intended). Maybe I'll check out this week's discussion, maybe I won't, but one thing is for sure, that I am done venting, this review has served its cathartic purpose, and I am back to my work, earplugs and all.
