Flood protection wetlands with a gravel trail and wildlife observation
A wonderful and useful little place designed for flood protection. By having green areas that absorb the shock of heavy rains sewers don't overflow and streets remain open. Deadly floods are in the news every day, and if you look closely it's because there is no managed green space that would have helped. Also, wildlife. Eastern bluebird, great blue heron, yellow-rumped warbler, song sparrow....all in a few minutes.
I love taking my dog for a walk here. It's quiet and the scenery is nice. The trail is kept clean and well maintained. I've been to too many parks and trails where folks don't have any respect and just drop trash wherever.
Large circle walk surrounding an open pond with island. Path is nicely gravel covered but flat and mostly open and can be hot during the day.
Nice spot for birding. I saw sandpipers, a pair of Great Blue Herons and something like a tern with Eastern Kingbirds and other common specimens about. Gravel trails are well-maintained with the edges mowed. There’s a nice floating dock not far from the entrance. The education boards are a nice touch. Dog walkers: the waste bag dispenser was empty when I was there, so don’t forget to bring your own. I only wish the NW part of the area had another loop to make a figure-eight. Definitely worth a stop, especially if you’re already going to the nearby Mequon Nature Preserve.
Nice little .80 mile loop. Well maintained gravel trail with a few benches to rest at. Lots of wildflowers and song birds. Probably really pretty in early spring.
