UPDAT: Thanks for the follow-up, but I’m honestly sick of getting canned PR responses. Giving me standard policy lines instead of an actual apology doesn't change what happened. The real issue here is a clear lack of staff training on how to treat members with basic respect. I hope the Y takes this as a sign to actually train their staff better. I’m not at the gym to make friends, but I do expect to be treated with basic respect. My friend and I were using the rowers during our regular workout when Coach Marci came up and asked how much longer we need. I told her about 20 minutes. She said she had a class starting and needed them in 5 minutes. I wanted to be flexible, so I offered to wrap up in 10 minutes instead to help her out. Instead of actually working with me, she completely ignored what I said and just kept repeating that she needed them in 5 minutes. It felt like she didn't care at all about what I had to say. A few minutes later, she came back AGAIN to push me off the machine. She made a point to tell me that the people in her class paid extra for personal training. Obviously they are more valuable than regular members, and we just don't matter as much. Look, I get it. It’s her job and she needs equipment for her paying clients. But that still doesn’t give her the right to talk down to regular members. If she had just asked politely in the first place, I would have gladly worked something out. What really bugged me wasn’t even the rowers, it was her condescending tone, facial expressions, and overall attitude. She made me feel like I was being unreasonable, even though I was the one trying to compromise. I emailed the director hoping they would address her behavior, but the response I got was just, "We’ll put up clearer signs in the future." Signs aren't the issue here. The issue is how staff treat regular members vs. paid class participants. They kept emphasizing that they want Y members to feel valued, which is pretty ironic considering how I was actually treated. Repeating those words won't fix a lack of basic respect.
