My experience at Gift of Love Donation Organization in Avon, CT was very disappointing. While I appreciate the organization's mission, the way my family was treated did not reflect the compassion and respect that a charitable organization should show to the people it serves. We were given only about 15 minutes to choose clothing, and throughout that time, volunteers repeatedly followed me, reminded me about the timer, and closely watched where I went. I did not observe other families being treated the same way, which made me feel singled out and unfairly monitored. I also had an upsetting interaction with an older volunteer when I selected a pair of shoes for my son. I explained that they were the correct size, but instead of accepting my answer, she insisted on checking the shoes my son was already wearing before allowing me to take them. I found this unnecessary, disrespectful, and embarrassing. On another occasion, an older volunteer stopped me from taking an item I had already selected without providing a reasonable explanation. Experiences like these made me feel unwelcome rather than supported. A charity should treat every person with dignity, fairness, and respect. Rules should be applied consistently to everyone, not selectively. Volunteers are there to assist families in need, not to argue with them, make them feel distrusted, or create unnecessary stress during what is already a difficult time. I sincerely hope the organization reviews how some staff members and volunteers interact with clients. Kindness, patience, and equal treatment should be at the heart of every charitable organization.
