We first visited Muratie in January 2020, and the experience was incredible. The service was warm, knowledgeable, and memorable. Since then, Muratie became a tradition for us, and we made a point of visiting on every holiday. Our last visit before this year was in February 2023. Coming back this year was deeply disappointing. The level of service has dropped drastically. The wine stewards conducting the tastings lacked enthusiasm and passion for what they were doing. More disappointing was their complete lack of knowledge about the farm’s rich history and stories. The previous staff had a way of blending the stories of the farm with the wines being served, creating an experience that felt authentic and unforgettable. Muratie used to feel like a laid-back escape where you could sit under the big Ansela’s Tree, relax, and truly connect with the stories behind the wines. The storytelling made the wines come alive. That charm and attention to detail now seem lost. It feels like the farm has shifted too far toward the commercial side, replacing passion and authenticity with staff who simply go through the motions. We even requested to meet Rijk, but the person serving us paid no attention to the request at all. As loyal supporters who would gladly buy wines through Cape Ardor and directly from the tasting room, we left without even purchasing a single bottle because the experience simply did not feel worth it. It is genuinely sad to see a place we loved lose so much of what made it special. I sincerely hope Muratie returns to its traditions and brings back people who are truly passionate about the farm, the wines, and the experience not staff who seem to be there only for a paycheck, with no enthusiasm or pride in what they do.
We were at the restaurant - the wine is amazing! Some of the best I’ve tasted. The main I had was quite disappointing though - tomato and basil gnocchi with Parmesan. It had a strange texture and was very mushy. Even though the portion was small, we found it hard to finish. The steak and lamb shank looked better. Dessert is basically ice cream with salted caramel popcorn. The taste was really good and the honey tuille that went with it gave good texture, but I feel that they could have a proper dessert on there too. Something a bit more decadent. Service was not good. Waited very long after mains to order dessert. I’m probably not going to return to eat here - I’d rather do a wine tasting.
Booked a table for lunch at Muratie yesterday as a random choice. Met the estate owner on the way in, who is a very friendly and helpful fellow. At the restaurant we were greeted by Martin, who was just a great guy and ensured we had a wonderful meal with super wines in the beautiful outdoor seating area (thank you, Martin). We were also very pleasantly surprised by the open door art spaces and completely relaxed atmosphere of the estate, and we were lucky enough to see the Merlot being brought in and the beginnings of the wine making process. All in all, just a brilliant experience. I’d recommend a visit to the estate and a meal at the restaurant without a moment’s hesitation and we’re already thinking about our next visit when the opportunity to escape the European winter next presents itself. Five stars without doubt.
I am reviewing the restaurant, not the accommodation. We ordered Beef Samosas & Seared Tuna from the small plates menu. Both were good. Portions were v generous. For mains we ordered 2 x Mussels (mediocre at best. Definitely not fresh) & 1 steak & fries (OK. Slight better than mediocre) Overall. Liked the location. Very rustic. Hens wandering between the tables. Wine was good & fairly priced. Shame about the mains. Would I return? Probably not. There are too many good/great restaurants in the winelands.
