Arrived at 8:40 AM for a 9:00 AM appointment, only to be told that the system is offline. 🤡🤡🤡 Because apparently, making an appointment, arriving early, and expecting the government’s systems to actually work is asking for too much. Welcome to South Africa — where you can clearly see the consequences of years of ANC government failure and mismanagement. The state of this building, the service, and now the systems themselves are unfortunately a perfect reflection of how badly basic public services are being managed. A simple appointment turned into another reminder of why South Africans have so little faith in government services. Unpleasant, frustrating, and frankly embarrassing. 9:00 AM appointment. System offline. No solution. No accountability. Just another day in South Africa. 🤡

Passport Collection – Stellenbosch Home Affairs I applied for my passport at Grabouw Home Affairs on 13 August and selected Stellenbosch as my collection point. My passport was ready for collection on 20 August – exactly 7 days later. The collection process was very straightforward: * When you arrive, go to Counter 4/5 and write your ID number on the list. You can already see from the list roughly where you are in the queue. * Take a seat and wait for them to call your name. * They take your fingerprints, you sign for your passport, and you’re done. Tip: I suggest going at around 12:00. This seems to be after the morning rush but before the school kids arrive to collect their IDs. I went the previous day at a busier time and experienced the school rush, so the difference was significant. The entire process took me only 15 minutes. Overall, a very quick and efficient experience. The staff were also helpful and friendly.

A massive and heartfelt thank you goes out to the staff at the Department of Home Affairs Stellenbosch branch. Your kindness and hard work makes all the difference. WE appreciate your dedication and service to our people. People should stop complaining and show some respect. These staff members do their very best.

Only 2 people assisting people on the day I went there.... had to get my daughters Birth certificate... I lost my ID, And the lady advised that I would need to get my ID or get a temporary ID, This was after a 2hour wait. Happy to go get ID fotos and return to the office in less than half am hour, Now the lady assisting the birth certificates temp id's ect. is now on lunch.... long story short, we could managed to get our daughter's birth certificate without my ID, They just needed my wife's ID, because we are married... now why sent me away the first time????

Accompanied a friend. We arrived 6:25am. There were already 25-30 people waiting outside the gate by then. When you arrive this early, you only have the option of street parking. There were only 10 parking paces on the road in front of the home affairs. Rest you’ll need to drive a little down to park. *Around 7am the lady came and asked the collection, birth registration people to queue on one side. The ID application people went in first to the front of the application only office and then the collection people went to the other side. The ID Applications and the collection/ birth registration etc.. are in different offices so you need to make sure if you come later where to queue. *7:30am the lady goes around to get your Name and ID number on the roster. *7:55am a guy comes out and explains to us that even though we are first at the home affairs, online booking, elderly people, people with disability and pregnant women will get priority. So we mustn’t get upset if we see people walking to the door and then let into the office. He also explained if you lost your ID or Passport and re- applying you will need an affidavit from the police station. If parents are applying for passport of the children both parents need to be there and their ID / birth certificates need to be presented. At 8:05 They let the first 12 people ( walk-ins) / Appointment people (2-3)in we were No 13 in the queue. We waited until 10:10am to be called in. By 9 am people were getting restless. No movement in the queue. Some people even went to ask security when the next people will be let in. Since appointments were prioritised. When the gate opens at 7am you are allowed to park inside the home affairs parking space. We left at 11:40am (5 hours 15min it took us) **Waiting time to get ID and Passport is around 4-6 weeks we were told. **He also said if making a branch appointment today online Jan 23, 2026, You will probably only get an appointment for end of Feb. **You can apply for ID/ Passport in Stellenbosch branch and collect at another branch. If you moving to another area in S.A. *He also said that Stellenbosch still allow walk-ins but Epping home affairs is strictly Bookings only. *There are about 15 chairs for people to sit by the application side. **The collection line looked like it was moving smoothly. **best if you can get an online booking. ** best to be the first 10 people in walk-line. It would be nice if they can let at least a few people from the walk-in line go in every hour. I guess they doing what they think is best. Much better than Home Affairs Cape Town.
