We travel a lot and I mean a lot. Cape Town, in particular, has become something of a second home to us. So when I say this place ranks comfortably in my top two stays in the Western Cape, it’s not a casual compliment, it’s a considered verdict. Now, full disclosure: I am hopelessly biased when it comes to squirrels, and the fact that there are some here already tipped the scales in their favour. But even setting that aside, this place stands in a league of its own. The setting is simply breathtaking. You arrive and, for a moment, forget where you are, it feels as though you’ve been transported to a quiet countryside wine farm. There’s a stillness, a beauty, an atmosphere that you just don’t find easily anymore. From the moment you walk into your room, you’re welcomed with a generous spread of thoughtful freebies, the kind of touches that immediately make you feel spoiled. In fact, every stay here feels a bit like a honeymoon. The level of care and attention is so intentional, so personal, that it genuinely feels as though you are the only guests on the property. The rooms deserve special mention. Each one is uniquely styled, yet every detail feels intentional, as if carefully curated over years, piece by piece, from a hundred different places. Nothing is accidental. It’s thoughtful, refined, and quietly luxurious without trying too hard. And then there’s the food. Quite simply, it’s the best in South Africa, hands down. It’s the kind of dining experience where you half expect a famous chef to walk out of the kitchen, give you a knowing nod, and congratulate you on your excellent choice. It’s that good. Unapologetically so. By the end of a weekend here, the experience becomes something more than just a stay, it feels like you’ve made a group of friends you’d happily invite over for a proper Free State braai. They get a solid 10/10 from me. For an 11/10, I would have loved to see a pair of slippers waiting in the room, although, to be fair, we might simply have missed them. And for a 20/10? A tame squirrel at reception, ready to welcome guests with a hug, would seal the deal. All things considered: exceptional, memorable, and absolutely worth returning to.

Very bad and disappointing experience. During our stay, $500 was stolen from my friend’s suitcase after we went for dinner. Hotel has a weird policy for housekeeping to enter rooms couple of times during the day. They did the cleaning during the day, and then came one more time in the evening, when we did not ask for any additional service or assistance. We reported the case immediately, and the hotel first promised an investigation, but then no action and no explanation or feedback from their side . Very disappointing. I would not recommend to stay here.

Really bad experience. During my stay, $500 was stolen from my suitcase — it was clearly opened and gone through. I told the hotel, and at first they said they would investigate and even mentioned a polygraph for staff… but then nothing happened. No follow-up, no responsibility, just excuses.

WARNING!!!! SERIOUS SAFETY & PRIVACY FAILURES- Do Not stay here This property may be visually stunning, but do not be fooled: behind the scenery is 2-star service, gross mismanagement, and deeply concerning breaches of guest safety and trust. At over $500 per night, this was not just disappointing — it was unacceptable. Hotel staff entered our room and went through our CLOSED suitcases and personal belongings WITHOUT permission, repacking and reorganizing our items. This was not requested, authorized, or even disclosed beforehand. This is a SERIOUS SAFETY, PRIVACY, and SECURITY violation. Guests should NEVER have to worry about who is handling their personal effects, passports, valuables, or private items. Allowing incompetent and unsupervised staff to rummage through closed luggage demonstrates a COMPLETE BREAKDOWN in internal controls and guest protection. This incident alone would justify walking out — but the failures continued. The room lost electricity in 96°F (35°C+) heat, leaving us in an uninhabitable room with no air conditioning. Despite two phone calls, staff took 45 minutes to respond, showing zero urgency. This level of indifference is dangerous, not merely inconvenient. Basic amenities were equally substandard. Water pressure was weak and unreliable, something no hotel charging luxury prices — should tolerate. Management and rhe ownerss response was as POOR as the service itself. The manager did not proactively reach out, (we had to go to him through the restaurant staff) and did not check on us, and did not demonstrate leadership. After all of this we received a lukewarm apology. There was no offer of a refund, no meaningful compensation, and no accountability. The final “resolution” offered for privacy violations, power failure in extreme heat, and systemic mismanagement? A free hat and an offer for a future upgrade to a hotel we will never visit again! An insult rather than a remedy. Luxury hospitality is built on trust, discretion, responsiveness, and SAFETY . This hotel fails on all four counts. A beautiful location cannot compensate for inept, inexperienced management and staff who are either poorly trained or improperly supervised. Until there is a serious overhaul of management and operational standards, this hotel does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as true 5-star properties. I would strongly caution future guests — particularly those concerned about PRIVACY , security, or BASIC SAFETY — to look elsewhere

Luxury hotel in scenic location. Think idealized Dutch colonial village set in superb botanical garden. This is one of those destinations that you just cannot fault. Instead of a room or suite, you get a cottage which is very tastefully furnished and decorated so that you feel immediately at home. We dined out (at Noop) but the the breakfasts at Grande Roche are excellent. The staff are all super friendly and helpful. This place is an experience that you should not miss on a tour of the winelands.
