We booked the Cube at Farm Sanctuary for three nights while visiting Franschhoek, expecting a fun and quirky stay based on the photos. Unfortunately, the reality was completely different. From arrival, things felt disorganised. Staff seemed confused before eventually directing us to the room. The Cube itself is extremely run down. Both the exterior and interior are in poor condition, and the door seals are missing, leaving large gaps that make it feel neither secure nor weatherproof. The bathroom windows have no blinds, meaning there is no privacy while showering or using the toilet, with full visibility to the surrounding public areas. The outdoor furniture shown in the listing is not provided. Instead, there was a single wooden lounger with no cushions, which was unusable. There are also no other seating options inside the room. The location of the Cube raises further concerns. It sits directly alongside a public road with low insecure fencing, security, or staff onsite after 5pm, which made it feel very exposed. Parking is in a paddock shared with horses, sheep, and cows, which is far from ideal, particularly if your car has an alarm. While we expected to be near animals, the Cube is placed within the same paddock where the public interacts with them, with no separation between guests and animals. At one point, a goat wandered straight onto our deck and attempted to enter the room. The room itself also felt unclean, with a stale, unpleasant urine odour. We arrived at 3pm, but by 4:45pm had booked alternative accommodation as we felt unsafe and uncomfortable, something we have never had to do before. When we returned the keys at 5pm, there was not a single staff member on site, despite ongoing public foot traffic nearby. We were genuinely disappointed, as we had been really looking forward to this experience. If you’d like to see the animals, it’s worth visiting for a walk or a glass of wine, but we would strongly recommend staying elsewhere.
