Go see the church. The inside is amazing! Plus, they have an excellent coffee shop in the yard, under the trees. But, the church interior is mind blowing!

Church Square gets its name from the Groote Kerk (“Great Church”), a prominent Dutch Reformed Church that stands nearby and dates back to the 1700s. But the square is not only religious in origin — it was once the site of a slave market during the Dutch colonial era. As part of Cape Town’s colonial infrastructure, the square served as a space where enslaved people were bought, sold, and hired out, a haunting reminder of the city’s entanglement with the global slave trade. Today, this history is acknowledged through a memorial art installation on the square — a series of granite blocks, engraved with the names of enslaved people and marked with symbolic footprints. There’s also an informative plaque offering historical context to visitors.

What a space! The warmth that you meet is right at the entrance. It doubles up as a church mediation space, hiv testing coffee shop and meet up point especially for walking tours

Lots of beautiful historical buildings here in this classic square, needs some historical signs explaining what they are. Also needs better cleaning as this square could be magical but is currently just too dirty.
