An absolute gem – this is how a South African gift shop should be What an absolutely wonderful find. Baraka is everything I wish more South African gift and souvenir shops were. There is such a refreshing difference between a shop filled with generic, mass-produced tourist curios and somewhere like this, where you can genuinely spend ages wandering around and discovering beautiful, interesting and unusual things. The shop is packed with locally made art, crafts, textiles, leather goods, jewellery, ceramics and décor, but it never feels like the same predictable collection of “African souvenirs” you see repeated everywhere else. Everything feels thoughtfully chosen, individual and full of character. I particularly loved the beautiful woven baskets, handmade leather goods, decorated ostrich eggs, artwork and some of the gorgeous fabric pieces. There is an enormous amount to look at, and you very quickly realise that this isn't simply a souvenir shop – it is a celebration of South African creativity and craftsmanship. What made our visit especially lovely, though, were the owners. They were incredibly warm and welcoming, happy to chat and clearly genuinely passionate about the shop and the people whose work they sell. Hearing that Baraka has been going since 2007 somehow made perfect sense – you don't keep an independent shop thriving for nearly twenty years without doing something very right. If you're visiting Cape Town and want to take home something that actually feels special and distinctly South African, rather than something churned out for the tourist trade, make the effort to visit Baraka. Even if you're not looking for anything in particular, it's simply a wonderful shop to explore. One of those places I'm genuinely delighted to have discovered. Very highly recommended.
