Historic 1937 train station with marble columns and 10 platforms
This building dates from 1937 and replaced two earlier stations - both in the same general area. The building is quite grandiose as evidenced by the frontage and the former ticketing area. These days electronic cards have effectively replaced paper tickets. There aren't many intercity trains running but the local suburban network carries a lot of commuters every day so the station is busy at rush hour.
New Zealand metro trains are as scarce as kiwis (the birds, not the folks) so it's nice to come here and see not only an architecturally interesting station but a few trains. Admittedly, Wellington would not be the easiest place to run suburban train lines and most of them head along the bay anyway. We caught the train to Johnsonville, probably the most interesting line.
This station is of an era of the early 20th century a beautiful building worth a visiting in its own right with marble collums and floors and atrium of a wonderful high celling. 10 platforms bring In electric trains from all around wellington. With wide walkways and subways ready to allow you quick access to wellington cbd or waterfront with many eateries and government offices. It is a few minutes walk to Aotearoa parliament buildings where one can observe debates on law amendments changes or introductions in a high security building.
A unique hub of buses and trains housed in a historic building. It has seen an incredible volume of souls in its time as the busiest transit place in NZ. Sadly that has now changed. A revamp of the New World metro taking place. Still a beautiful building, inside and out.
A train station with a very nice architecture. The people at the counter are very kind and helpful. If you came as a tourist, I recommend that you go all the way to Petone and back. There are not many places in the world with train tracks by the sea.
