20260806 - came to this museum for te papa cafe instead of museum tour. Place is not crowded. Ordered cinnamon bread and large flat white for sgd 11.82. You can request to warm the bread. Bread was soft and nice and goes well with flat white coffee.
I have lived in Wellington for over 16 years and had never visited this Museum. We are frequent Te Papa visitors so thought to try something new. Wow. I had no idea how amazing this place is! We had allocated about an hour to look around and we needed much more than that. A brilliant and interactive place for little explorers too. We will be back many times!
We had the pleasure of doing the Wellington walking tour on Saturday, which starts at the museum. After a very interesting tour of the museum we headed to the cable car and on to the planetarium. Our tour guidefor the morning, Raureti, looked after us superbly at every venue. The tour also included coffee and cake at Table Top eatery. As the tour starts at 9.30am we had some quiet time in the museum before it opened, which I appreciated! A lovely way to spend a Saturday morning, I'd highly recommend it.
This museum is located by the docks of Wellington, great access from the public and a playground right beside it. A very kid friendly museum with free access for all kiwis. The whole building is multi floored packed with different interesting modules, activities, paintings and detailed descriptions. The first floor is stunning, a great first impression as if you stepped onto an ancient boat cruising along the seven seas. There is no real theme for the whole museum, there are ships, scientific discoveries, fantasy characters, games, high achievers from NZ and so much more. It feels like a new adventure every other room you find within this complex. Honestly I had a lot of fun within this museum, there was a chalk room at the end of the first floor which gave kids opportunities to have fun and express themselves. The third floor had a guess who game. I got crazy shouts and won both the rounds I played against my sister, had a great time. The only real improvements that could be made is that we skimmed through the entire building rather quickly in about 30 minutes. The facts and figures weren’t very eye catching and some floors just had rooms where they wouldn’t necessarily be noticed. I would give it a 5/5 if there was more interesting views as I took all the funny photos that I saw over the 4 or so floors that was within the museum.
Tour guide was knowledgeable and able to answer questions. Self walk through was pleasant. Plenty to read, some interactive exhibits. A must see early in your trip to understand the history of the area. Free for locals, cost for tourist. Small extra charge for guided tour, runs on the hour.
