Skyline Walkway trailhead - Old Coach Road

Hiking TrailWellington

Dual-use track extending 18 kilometers across Wellington ridges

About

Skyline Walkway trailhead - Old Coach Road is a hiking area in Wellington. Our track is an 18-kilometer dual-use path, running north and south between Erlestoke Crescent in Churton Park and Makara Saddle in Karori, which can be completed in stages. We offer an experience that traverses Wellington's ridge tops, following the Outer Green Belt onto Mount Kaukau, the Crow's Nest, Kilmister Tops, and Johnston Hill. On clear days, our route provides views of the Kaikoura ranges, the Marlborough Sounds, Wellington city and harbor, and the Tararua and Orongorongo ranges. Our walkway is marked with purple directional markers, guiding visitors along the track. Dogs are permitted on leads outside designated exercise areas.

Pleasant and relatively easy way to reach the summit of Mt Kaukau. Return walk is 10km, allow 2-3 hours. Track mostly exposed and can be very windy so take layers. A number of access points from nearby streets though no dedicated parking here. Track is well graded and only gets steeper toward the summit

Cruisy, gentle way to get to Mt Kaukau.

Really great view eventough it was cloudy that day. Just take a short walk from the last route 1 bus stop (J'ville west - Lyall Bay, CMIIW).Based on the Google Maps, this place is a border between Wellington and eastern part of North Island, even I can see the ocean on a far! I believe it will be way more astounding if the weather was clear and sunny. We also can see some earth's fault here.

Beautiful walk. Plenty of native birds. A small river in the beginning of the walk.

Joins onto the Skyline Walkway, passing over farmland in places; you can walk to Mt Kaukau from here or go to Rifle Range Road. You can also see the wind turbines and South Island on a good day. The path is exposed to the elements, and there are no shelters up here, so I can't recommend coming on a windy or rainy day.
