Skyline Walkway Trailhead - Makara Saddle is a hiking area in Wellington offering an 18-kilometer dual-use track along Wellington's ridge tops, which can be completed in stages. Our route follows the Outer Green Belt onto Mount Kaukau, the Crow's Nest, Kilmister Tops, and Johnston Hill. We provide clear directional markers, and the track offers views of the Kaikoura ranges, Marlborough Sounds, Wellington city and harbour, and the Tararua and Orongorongo ranges on clear days.
Great place to start your walk across the skyline walkway. Its not a circular walk unless you want to wake an urban route back. There's parking and it wasnt busy. Good walk, pretty easy as you already start at the top of the hill and just walk along the ridge. Good views of Wellington.

A nice, intermediate hike. You just have to be aware of the bikers as the trek is specially made for that.

Skyline Walkway – A Perfect Way to Welcome Christmas & New Year 🌬️🌄
This is a wonderful way to welcome Christmas and the New Year — completing a four-and-a-half-hour walk along the Skyline Walkway is truly something special.
The walk begins in lush bush, winding through peaceful valleys, before gradually climbing up to the hilltops and onto the ridgeline. Once you reach the Skyline, the view opens up dramatically. Step by step, you experience an incredible near-360-degree bird’s-eye view of the Wellington region.
You can feel the famous Wellington wind, see the ridges of surrounding mountains, spot the large wind turbines and electricity towers, and understand how power is transmitted across the landscape. From up there, the shape of the harbours, hills, and valleys becomes so clear — it’s like reading the geography of Wellington in real life.
Yes, parts of the walk are fully exposed to sun and wind, but that contrast is what makes it special. After spending time on the open ridgeline, you descend back into the bush, where everything becomes calm and sheltered again. The return to the forest brings a deep sense of peace and relaxation.
It’s a truly wonderful experience — one of the must-do walks in the Wellington region. Unforgettable. 🌿💨

Really close to where I live, there's parking for walkers and cyclists, assuming courteous parking rather than random abandonment I've seen a few times! One way is the Skyline Walkway, heading towards Ōtari and the other, across the road, is one of the principal access points to the Mākara Peak Mountain Bike Park where I go walking and running most days! I love the place and pinch myself I live so close by!

Pleasant walking trial and not too far from Wellington. Good view and at times can be just hills around. Also be cautious about bikes on track. Overall good one. After the walk, you can drive to Makara beach as well
