The tree top pathway is barely 3 metres and not really at much of a height. The trails are poorly marked and it is hard to tell if one is on the correct trail path or not. Even the easy trails are very narrow so one has to be very sure of foot to do these. If it has rained and the paths are wet, it gets slippery and dangerous. Dont attempt the medium or hard ones unless you are in good condition. Even though I do trails regularly and am in pretty good physical condition for my age, it got really tricky for me on the medium difficulty trail. I did all trails across two days except the hard one. The picnic area is nice and open but the trails, even the easy ones are not safe for children. Toilets are open 7am to 7pm (if I remember correctly). That said, the forest area is definitely worth seeing and experiencing. If you sight an eel, they are beautiful creatures. The 800 year old miso tree is interesting. At the top, the experience of being in that dense foliage is wondrous. Gloves recommended so you can hold on to the trees as you go up and down. Or walking sticks for seniors.

A great starting point for the Loop Track to the Skyline Walkway. It takes about 50 minutes of uphill hiking through the forest before you reach the ridge, where you're rewarded with stunning views.

Early spring vs summer. The section of the Blue Loop on the Te Ara o Tama Track that links to the Skyline Track looks completely different. Highly recommend these tracks no matter you take the pink track along the stream, where you can spot longfin eels at a few points, or explore the other tracks at your own pace. The Blue Loop can still be slippery even a couple of days after rain, so hiking boots are always a good idea.

A beautiful and peaceful place to explore native New Zealand bush. The walking tracks wind through lush forest with towering tree ferns, dense greenery, and plenty of birdsong, making it feel like a true escape from the city. The paths are easy to follow and well maintained. It’s a calm, relaxing spot that’s perfect for a gentle walk, photography, or simply spending time in nature. A fantastic place to visit if you’re in Wellington and want a quiet, scenic outdoor experience focused on native flora.

Great place for all nature lovers. The place is densely covered with ferns and pines, with lots of brush filling in between. The preserve is more than hundred years old, original conceptualized and preserved by a single person. Great fore sight into what would happen to wilderness once the city expands. We can see several species of tree ferns and pines. The walks are steep and some times turing. However, there are several resting stop places along the walks. There is a particularly interesting barbeque garden beside a stream. Fully preserved wilderness of about 17acres close to the central business district. If you love any jungle, do not miss this place
