Loop walk with vantage points, gun emplacements, and beach return
Makara Beach Walkway is a hiking area in Wellington. Our loop walk climbs to vantage points with expansive views, offering glimpses of farmland, the beach, and historic gun emplacements. We provide an advanced tramping track that returns along the beach, starting and ending at Mākara Beach.

Its beautiful, in a harsh a and bleak way. Stone and pebble beach, lots of driftwood. Big waves when I visited, not much wind though. Plenty of parking and a toilet block. The cafe is currently closed, not sure for how long, so bring your own supplies if your making a day of it. The walks not to long or hard if you jist want to go to the old forts on the headland, its just a bit further to the wind turbine. You can continue on a longer walk if wanted but I didn't do it.
Do the walk on a fine Wellington Spring morning. Partly cloudy but warm, not too windy. Walk was good, but tough. We went the high route and decided to not do the loop or an out and back route, because it was steep and our knees likely couldn’t handle the trek downhill. We made a nice loop of it by heading to the wind farm car park and then the roads back to the start. All up just a shade over 7.5km and a good walk
Despite some paths are closed due to lambing season, it's still enjoyable and have a tons of beautiful view 360 degree! starts at 10am and ended also on Makara Beach, stops for a minute at Gun Emplacements, continue to closed gate of Windmill path. total 2 hours of walking and some light trekking. Got some steep ways but it really paid offs. Prepare some snacks and full bottle water because you'll need it. But if you come at noon, the cafe are already open to filling up your empty stomach.
A beautiful moderately difficult work mainly at the beginning which is very steep. The rest is rather easy however at high tide the walk back across the beach is incredibly rocky be prepared for some jumping and small climbs. Good footwear is a must along with a decent level of fitness.
