Had a lovely time at Hummingbird the other Saturday. I really enjoyed the relaxing, dim lighting and candlelit atmosphere. It felt sophisticated and elegant, yet somehow like a world away from Courtenay Place. To start, we ordered the focaccia with lemon hummus. Unfortunately, the focaccia was a bit of a miss for me. I prefer focaccia to be oily and spongey, whereas this was quite dry. For mains, we both opted for the market fish, which was blue moki served in a French-style curry sauce on a bed of greens, topped with crispy shallots and accompanied by clams. This dish was exquisite. It was so unique and beautifully executed. I loved the creaminess and gentle spice of the curry, which complemented rather than overpowered the delicate flavour of the fish. There was also a generous serving of vegetables. The portions of fish were surprisingly large and cooked perfectly. For dessert, we moved into the speakeasy room to enjoy the live jazz. The music was fantastic, relaxing, tasteful, and played at just the right volume. Seated in one of the booths, we ordered dessert. I chose the sticky date pudding with vanilla ice cream, and it was everything I had hoped for. A thick, decadent slice of pudding absolutely drenched in caramel sauce, served with a huge scoop of ice cream and crunchy toffee pieces. They nailed it. My partner ordered the lemon meringue cheesecake with lemon curd and caramelised white chocolate, which he also found faultless. There were a couple of slightly awkward moments where the manager corrected newer staff in front of us, which made me feel a bit sorry for them. That said, everyone was friendly and it did little to detract from what was otherwise an outstanding evening. I would definitely go back, especially for the music and desserts.
