About

Putangirua Pinnacles Reserve and campsite is a nature preserve in Cape Palliser. We offer the Pinnacles Ridge Track, an easy to intermediate walking track leading to a lookout with views of earth pillar formations. Our reserve was a filming location for the Lord of the Rings and features a stream crossing, car park, toilet, and shelter at the track entrance.

At the moment 3.5.26 it is not a roundtrip since the path washed out. However you can go to the lookout. then back down the same way. Then walk up the riverbed. Not after rain or higher water.Caution and commen sence.

This is an epic walk. However is not an easy walk, it is moderate if you are fit. You will be climbing up the whole way, it took us one hour to get to the top with a few stops for the unfit group members. Wear good shoes, if you are unfit, take some water. The danger are a bit over blown but you should be careful crossing the creek if it has been raining. Was it worth it for the view, 50/50 but it was worth it for the sense of accomplishment.

If you are here for LOTR, just follow the riverbed up until you reach the valley. We first hiked up the trail to the viewpoint, but the view inside the valley is much better and also faster and almost flat. However, you can also do walk a circle - hike up to the viewpoint and from there down to the valley. But when you reached the valley you have to walk up in the riverbed again to reach the LOTR spot.

Finally having opportunity to hike this track for 3hours returns with 2 kids (8 years and 4 years old girls). There are two tracks we can try: to the lookout (a view of the rocks from above) or follow the river to the gravel mountains. We chose to follow the river path, because the goal is not the lookout (passing through the forest and climbing up). The entire journey is full of rocks, gravel, sand, and often have to jump across the river. So make sure you wear the proper trail shoes, wear sunhat and apply sunscreen. Bring extra food and water too.
