Cast-iron lighthouse built in 1897, reached by 258 steps
This is the only north island spot that u can see the wild seals. This season is full of baby seals. winter time During summer time its a lot of bigger ones not many people here so plenty of car park. its not very cold during winter. suitable for kids
Absolutely magical place! We got so lucky visiting at this time of year, which is peak season for spotting the seal colony and the baby seals 🦭. The views are incredible and watching the pups play is unforgettable. A total must-see.
Awesome drive from Wellington to Cape Palliser. And yes, it was a great experience in this place. Its a magical experiance on top of the lighthouse . Amazing view. Amd yes, we saw lots of Sea lions as well... Amazing experience
wonderful well spaced stairs to the lighthouse. if u take it slow you will get up the @250 stairs easily. If you go east from the light house and through the gate look out for mushroom and if you look closely in the first huge puddle, it is home to some beautiful bright green tadpoles of Bell frog. Be careful and respectful of the wonderful resident fur seals along the coast.
We went to Putangirua Pinnacles, so we decided to visit this place as well and we were not disappointed! The drive can be a bit tricky for small cars, with one particularly narrow spot (by the geyser), but it’s no problem for an SUV. There are quite a few stairs leading up to the actual lighthouse, and it’s pretty windy up there. The highlight for us was definitely the seal colony — super cute, and it was the most seals we’ve seen in New Zealand! 🦭
