This is the first time I've seen the castle entrance open in the several years I've been coming to Canet. The site is lovely, and the few videos accessible via QR code are very interesting. It's a shame we can't see more, especially the church or the ice well, but it's still good for a free site. The town should also install a bike rack, as it's forbidden to bring bikes inside, but there's nothing to lock them to in front of the site.

This castle, first mentioned in the 11th century, is not merely a ruin; it is one of the rare examples of a medieval castle preserved on the plains of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Its fascinating history makes it a must-see for heritage enthusiasts. From antiquity, Canet was a strategic crossroads and a flourishing trading port in the Middle Ages. The castle was at the heart of conflicts between the kingdoms of Aragon, Majorca, and France. It even hosted distinguished guests, notably Yolande of Bar in 1384 and Emperor Sigismund in 1415, who came to Canet to try to end the Western Schism. Although the building has been extensively remodeled over the centuries (from the 17th to the 19th century), it retains notable features such as the Romanesque Church of Saint-Martin (11th century) and a remarkable ice well dug in 1688, considered one of the finest in southern France. Having fallen into ruin after a long period of neglect and converted into a farm, the castle is now listed as a historical monument. It has been undergoing restoration since the 1960s, initially spearheaded by the Friends of Old Canet association. Now owned by the municipality of Canet-en-Roussillon (acquired in 2024), a comprehensive restoration and enhancement program has been launched, drawing on research from the University of Perpignan. In short, the Vicomtal Castle is an essential visit for understanding the complex history of Roussillon. This is a place that is being reborn and deserves to be supported and discovered. (Note: Visiting the ruins is generally possible from June to September. It is advisable to check the opening hours set by the municipality.)

Bit disappointed. It is only open on certain days and unfortunately our visit did not coincide with that day.
