Mountain pass with views of Banyuls-sur-Mer and the sea
Views of the town of Banyuls and the sea. The hut is a refuge, the plaque speaks of the capture of two boys, one of them Agusti Rueda who died tortured at the hands of the police. We crossed from Espolla by car to Banyuls
This pass is mentioned as "temporary closed" on my navigation app. But I decided to try my luck and have a look. On the top of that, I badly wanted to escape from the Sunday traffic that made the D914 a noisy and unpleasant place for a cyclist. I took a right turn at the roundabout leading to Paulilles and headed for Cosprons. From there on I simply followed the signage for "véloroute de la Côte vermeille". There is hardly any traffic all the way to the top at 355 meters. It's a gradual and easy climb for the first 8 clicks or so. The last 1,500 meters are quite steep with a gradient of +10%. There is no roadblock that prevents vehicles from climbing down to Espolla, 10 km away. Actually, the road surface on the Spanish side is pretty good. Just a kilometer down, there was a couple of cars of the Guardia Civil. All in all, it was an enjoyable ride.
As of 22nd Feb 2024 the pass is open to cars. The stone has been moved aside.
An adventure trip with beautiful sights. Doable by car but some parts are somewhat narrow.
Lovely quiet rode. I really enjoyed the hike. I had plans to go further but in July there’s no water and I was on foot.
