Chapelle du Christ

5.0(1)Church

“Chapelle du Christ is a small wayside chapel on that road, about 200 m below the hermitage of Notre-Dame-du-Château. It holds a restored 18th-century Christ on the Cross (returned after conservation in 2013). Traditionally a station on the old processional path from the village. Not the main hermitage church (which has its own side chapel of the same name). Free access when the site is open; same summer car ban as the rest of the Ultrera road. Walk from Sorède via Place du Christ.”

5.0(2)Church

“Sant Aciscle i Santa Victòria de Sureda is the parish church of Sorède (Catalan: Sureda), in the old village next to the former castle. Documented in 1051. The first Romanesque church was rebuilt around 1400, then again from 1730. Today: single nave, semi-octagonal apse. Surviving Romanesque fragment — a 12th-century Corinthian capital set above the west door. Inside: 18th-century baroque altarpieces (notably Our Lady of the Rosary) and 1879 neo-gothic stained glass. Patrons: the Cordoban martyrs Acisclus and Victoria (feast 17 November). Starting point for the marked walk toward Notre-Dame-du-Château.”

Château d'Ultrera

4.5(38)Historical Site

““Château d’Ultrera (Castell d’Ultrera) is a ruined hilltop fortress on a rocky spur of the Albères, about 570 m above sea level, on the commune of Argelès-sur-Mer but historically tied to Sorède. The name comes from Latin castrum vulturarium (“vulture castle”). Occupation goes back at least to the Visigoths (mentioned in 673); medieval lords of Sorède lived there. The castle and its chapel were blown up in 1675. Little more than wall traces remain on the peak. Just below sits the restored hermitage and chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Château. Reached by a steep walk (or a rough track part-way) with wide views over the Roussillon plain and the sea.””
